It's a 20 minute hike just to reach the steps but it's a must do . Take pictures everywhere . The stair climb isn't that bad . Ring the bell at the top and make a wish

A beautiful place with sweeping views. Go early to skip the mass of people that can accumulate, I started hiking from Bakio before sunrise. I was by myself for sunrise and it was a truly magical scene. Bring water and trainers for shoes, the hills...More

Yes, it can be a difficult hike (especially back to the car park) and yes, it can be busy with many other tourists, but it's totally worth it. The views both approaching and from the church site are spectacular and it's really quite a special...More

We did this hiking tour to the church today and we really enjoyed it although it was slightly raining all the time. The view is amazing and is really worthy to go all the way down to the coast and the the 241 stairs up...More

These recent months/years a lot of tourists have started to come here, and there are not that many parking places, even the walk up to the top is not that fun. Try not to come on a sunny weekend if possible, and you will enjoy...More

Sometimes doing something physically challenging makes the end result all the sweeter, this was the case in our visit to Gaztelugatxe. Reading some other reviews seems it was lucky for us that it was overcast with a misty rain as wasn’t overrun with people as...More

While it's a beautiful site and perfectly situated along the coast, it's pretty overrun with tourists. It didn't blow us away but perhaps we were missing something that all the other reviews are raving about? Wear good shoes as it's an hour each way from...More

It is a place that transmits peace. The views are amazing and when you climb all the stairs and rich to the church you must make the bell ring. This is the tradition and you can miss this if you are visiting the Basque Country....More

Without Daenerys! Ha ha. The view alone is enough motivation for the 5km, 2 hours walk down the cliff and up to the church, for 3 ring of the bell.

From Madrid is so far away, i would recommend spending 2 days in lovely Bilbao and from there is easy to 30 minutes ride by a rented car...

Hi Amanda! You won't have any problem in your visit this nice place, it's a safety place. You'll be meeting with many people, independently the day of your visit, obviously more in the weekend. Enjoy your holidays!

Hi, I visited in late August after which I understand it was going to only be open one day a week for the winter. I would suggest getting in contact with the Tourismo Office in Bermeo or Gernika.
