A must to see if you like views and or history. Wear good foot ware as considerable climbing if you want to go to he top. However there are stopping areas along the way. Views are great. Seniors can enter for free. Look for the elevator access or you can drive or walk up to the main access

    A must SEE!! Santa Barbara
It’s a must! Fantastic viewing of Alicante and surroundings. Take water and good walking shoes. We took the lift and walked down. November was 23C but in summer take suntan lotion.

    Great guided tour!!
If you don’t want to stand in extremely long queues for the lift to the castle (from beach level) then best get there for opening time. The small cost of the lift is well worth it (costs nothing to come back down). We booked the English guided tour (free) for 11am and were the only ones on it. David was very knowledgeable on the history of the castle and we found the tour very interesting indeed. Lovely views from the top too. Well worth the visit.

    Well worth the visit
What a wonderful day out exploring the castle and it’s wonderful views, well worth the drive. Lots of walking, hills and steps, fine for us but not those that are not steady on their feet or in a wheelchair. Lots of people walking dogs and pushing prams. A great day out for all the family as well as educational.

    Fantastic experience with wonderful views.
Fabulous views at the top. Interesting history, well explained at the site with written , many in English and visual aids. Entry was ridiculously reasonable and we used the lift. We were a little confused, as we could see signs saying the lift could only be used for mobility and pushchair purposes but there didn't seem any other way to access the top. Perhaps things would be different in the peak of the summer. Thoroughly recommended and so worthwhile. This experience has made our holiday.

A lovely trip for great photos and a walk!
The views were spectacular! Free entry, clean facilities, cafes and lots to explore. Parking on the hill is free with helpful attendants as spots can be small! Take cash for them as they don’t accept card, as a tip, it’s not compulsory but they are very helpful chaps.

Outstanding views; probably a “must do.”
We took the lift up (it’s free for children under 5 and seniors over 65; otherwise €2.70), which you might want to consider even if you’re more fit because there’s still a lot of climbing to be done once you’re inside. There are three main levels of the site and you enter on the lowest one. There isn’t much to see inside any of the structures; most of what you see is outside. But don’t let that discourage you; when you get to the top you’ve got a 360 degree view of Alicante and the surrounding countryside. It’s very impressive. The ride down in the lift is free. There are WCs, a cafe and a gift shop on the site. We spent about an hour on our visit.

    Spectacular views
Don’t do what we did and get lost looking for the tunnel that takes you to the lift that goes up to the castle . The entrance is beside the pedestrian walkway that takes you over the busy road from the beach . We assumed to our cost that the entrance was up , it’s not it’s at street level . So go down the stairs and you will find it . There is one lift it takes approx 10 people at a time . Well worth the money . The castle is big with a number of levels not great for people with mobility issues . There is a bar and toilets . It’s the number one attraction for a reason . Worth a visit .

    Brilliant challenging walk, spectacular views
Brilliant! We walked it all the way up and down and although hot and at times challenging, so worth it to fully experience this. We walked through a lovely park with fountains and orange trees, and once at the top the views are spectacular! Free entrance too, a real sense of achievement and definitely earned a cold beer afterwards

    Fantastic Walk
My boyfriend and I walked up here one sunny Saturday while in Alicante. We didn't go up the main path, instead taking the path less trodden, towards the West of the city. There was a bit of an uphill struggle, but we were rewarded with simply breathtaking views across the city! I would say you need a decent level of fitness to be able to climb this without breaking a sweat, but it isn't hugely difficult. Definitely a must if you are in Alicante!

I love the light during the last hour before sunset. Its warm tones and hues makes the city and marina below appear magical and the old walls and features of the castle alive.
From the Mercado Central coming I walked up the stairs and wall sections starting at the corner of Avenida de Jaime II and Calle de Alvarez. An amazing and very picturesque walk up. It took me leaving plenty of time for picture taking about 30 minutes to the lower interior of the castle. Once there you find countless opportunities to learn about many of the well preserved / restored features of Castillo Santa Barbara from the various centuries as well a treasure trove of motives on or off the beaten path. The views from up top are absolutely stunning and tempt to enjoy for hours. In particular the two little watch towers perching over the side of the castelwalls in near gravity-less manner on the marina side on the second and third to top layers gets people's imaginative juices going as it relates to taking a unique vacation pic.
Walking down I highly recommend to take the stairs / paths through the La Ereta park and San Roque district. It's pedestrian only, tiny callitas are marvellous to see and spend some curious time in. Along Calle de San Rafael you will encounter a little square with Cerveceria Rincon de Antonio as well as other places further down worth sitting down for a drink or meal.

A must-see for tourists in Alicante. The view is beautiful, and you can see the whole city from the top. We took the elevator to the castle, which cost 2.70€ per person. Otherwise it’s totally free, and you can walk to the top if you don’t want to spend money.
If you can read spanish there are many exhibitons inside, which tell the history about the area.

Walked up via the barrios. Such an interesting walk. Probably should call it a climb really as there are many steps to negotiate. You need an hour on a hot day to complete the climb. Take water!
On the way you will pass a starred restaurant if you're feeling well off and hungry. At the top, within the castle, there are more reasonably priced refreshments.
The castle itself is far bigger than I expected covering a huge area. There are displays that inform you of historical detail and these are in English as well as other languages.
The castle is free to enter as is the car park for those who want to drive up. Be aware the car park is very small and you may be turned away.
I could not fault the place.

There is a beautiful view over Alicante, the castel has few nice spots to visit, rooms and corridors and a museum. You can walk from the city but it's about 90 min or taking a lift from the main street right to the top in less than a minute. The ride cost a little over 3 euro

I visited here with my friend during a weekday on the first week of July. We decided to go early and arrived at 10:30AM (it opened at 10AM). We were so glad we did because by the time we had left (2 hours later), there was a long queue outside! On the official website and on Google Maps, it stated free admission, however upon arrival, we had to pay for a ticket (roughly around 2.70 Euros I think, I can't remember). You will then walk through a long tunnel with blue lighting and then follow the signs to get inside a lift/elevator. A staff member will operate the lift. You will see beautiful views from the castle, sea view from Playa del Postiguet, Marina Deportiva del Puerto de Alicante, and views of the buildings around the city. It was scorching hot and we walked for 2 hours around the castle. I have plantar fasciitis, so I was prepared to wear comfortable footwear with arch support. I do recommend wearing comfortable footwear if you are visiting this castle and bring a bottle of water as it gets very hot! Thankfully, there are toilets on site and there is a small ice-cream parlour (but we did not buy anything from there). Also, there is a small museum about the castle. I don't recall seeing a souvenir shop on our way out though. We took bus 21 (or L21 on Google Maps) near our hotel which can get you to the city centre, approx 20 minutes from our hotel (Port Alicante). Overall, it is well worth visiting of you are planning to visit Alicante, and be prepared to do a lot of walking.

A few things, firstly, I highly recommend paying the three or four euros to take the elevator from the beach front entrance to the top of the mountain. You should probably wear comfortable walking shoes however this is not by any means and expensive space. There are many benches and Knox to sit and appreciate the breezes and breathtaking views from this lofty perch. If you’re a cat lover like I am, keep your eyes peeled for a small colony that also enjoys sunbathing with a view of the Mediterranean. There was something very special about the entire ruins the captured my imagination and I do intend to return perhaps with a sketchpad or a set of paints.

Still a great place to visit whilst staying in Alicante. As a wheelchair user I was a little bit reluctant, but the six of us in our party used the lift to go all the way to the top and whilst the more able bodied of us walked the perimeter of the castle, those of us less mobile were able to sit in the sunshine in the beautiful breeze and admire stunning views over the coast while enjoying coffee from the cafe there. Altogether, highly recommended!

My husband and I trekked up to this fortress. It was well worth the walk and sweat. Wear good, Comfortable shoes, take lots of water. There is no entrance fee. There is a restaurant on the way up (we entered through the old town by the water museum) called La Ereta (we Will be back here for sure) that sold us water for 2euros (they saved us). HA! We were not prepared for the walk. But we do know better. :). At the middle of the climb (inside the fortress) is another restaurant where one could chill, rest, catch your breath and enjoy the surroundings. One could purchase water, beers, etc there. Public toilets are also available for free. The elevators are presently out of order (do not know why or how long). The whole atmosphere is family, child and pensionar friendly. It is a must when you visit Alicante. It shows One how Huge Alicante really is. The views are absolutely amazing. Very picturesque!! Recommended!!

We are no spring chickens, so the tunnel entrance for the lift was a must for us. You get to this ,across the main road from the paseo de gomiz, just at the tram terminus. If you are an OAP...prove this, and save a few cents....but 5 euro for us both is well worth it. Once your up the lift, the rest of the walk to the top is fairly easy.
Enjoy the views, and enjoy a refreshment at the little cafe next to lift exit. Or, for a bit more substantial fayre and better views, wander down the path to the glass fronted terrace restaurant.
We finished tour by walking down the west path to the pavement below.....along from the Mercado Central, then off into Rambla.

The Castle was closed for three days due to Storm Gloria but we did get to visit when it opened on the fourth day. The lift avoids the steep uphill climb and is free to pensioners but you must provide documentation i.e. passport. The size of the castle is not fully appreciated until you reach the top. It is truly spectacular. The views are amazing giving a 360 degree vista of the whole of Alicante. The Castles history and Spanish family Coats of Arms are on display. There is a nice Cafe where you can relax and rest. There are also toilet facilities available free of charge. Entry to the castle is free.
