Set in the ancient heart of the city, opposite the monumental Basilica of Santa María, this imposing new building takes up an entire city block and encompasses the oldest civil construction in the city: the venerable Casa de La Asegurada, an outstanding example of Valencian baroque architecture built as a public wheat granary in 1685. Known as the MACA, the Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art is owned by the City Council and is one of Alicante's leading cultural venues. The construction and refurbishment project was designed by the architectural firm Sancho-Madridejos and funded by the Valencian Regional Government. It boasts a total floor space of 4680 m2 spread across four storeys and two basement levels, and features one temporary exhibition hall, four exhibition halls for the permanent collections, a library, teaching venues, an events hall, storerooms, workshops, plus quarters for security, administration and the like. The Museum's diaphanous spaces showcase its rich and varied collections of contemporary art according to highly rigorous museum programming in which conservation and education are given top priority.

Ok museum, although not very big. Arranged on three floors with both sculptures and paintings. There were pamphlets with information about the collection and museum but they were all in Spanish and that's a shame because I think one needs more information about the pieces...More

I am not a great fan of contemporary, abstract and conceptual art. But this museum has a nice atmosphere and interesting exhibits by Spanish artists which challenged my aesthetic in a very nice way.

Really enjoyed it here. It has lots of modern art in although lots of the signs are in Spanish and I couldn't understand them. But the art is self explanatory most of the time. A small leaflet with a english explanation of the art would...More

I am not generally speaking a modern art fan, but did find a couple of pieces that I liked. Free entry so worth dropping in to widen ones experiences.

This free museum is not overwhelming at all and has different art medium on display. Its a nice escape for an hour or two from the 'old' Alicante. There did 'nt seem to be a gift shop or cafe, unheard of in England!

Mostly geometric art with some optical illusion stuff as well. Very nice to stroll around, if you have an hour (no more time needed than that) to spare.

First of all, it was a pleasant surprise that the entrance was free of charge. When we were at the museum, the ground floor section was closed, but we could go upstairs to see the rest of the collection. We had no expectations, but it...More

If the weather outside is not that nice, you can give it a try. I personally didn't like it: three floors of artworks, not really commented. You have to guess what that is and what it represents, because there's only the biography of the author...More
