This lovely little town is where we stayed during our time in the Colca Canyon. We loved every minute of it! Worth getting up early to see live music in the main plaza. We spend the rest of the time relaxing, doing some hikes and even mountain biking. Can't believe most people come here only for the day. To top it off, you can enjoy the hot springs more than once. Come here, you won't regret it.

The morning dancers bring some excitement to the square - however for me the sight of the volcano Uyo Uyo on a pale blue sky background was the highlight of our short stay in Yanque - plus I bought a snazzy hat from a street stall.

This place seems to be a stop for all tour groups on their way to Colca Canyon. Even though it's usually quite early in the morning the locals seemed very keen to put something on for the tour groups that stop. So there are ladies with the ubiquitous alpacas, very cute, but also a group that puts on a dance. It consists of men (dressed as women) and women who perform a local dance in the centre of the main square, obviously for donations. Makes for a nice distraction whilst stretching your legs or having a quick coffee.

We were headed out to see the Condors at Cruz del Condors and stopped on the way to see the morning dance in the plaza. Colorful costumed locals danced and streets vendors peddled their wares. A nice way to start your Colca Canyon day.

We made a 15 minute stop here on the way back from Condor Point before our 5 hour drive back to Arequipa. What a little gem! The streets were buzzing locals in their traditional outfits and their adorable Alpacas. We found a Colca Sours stand so we took full advantage of that! We had a little walk up to the church and engaged with the locals before heading back to Arequipa. You don't need to spend long here at all as there isn't a massive amount to see.

The church is less interesting than Maca and as it’s not really on the road to the mirador of condors there are no life in the plaza contrary to Maca, a smaller village

... on a daily basis the local school girls and their mothers are here, dancing and selling gifts. It's a lovely start to the day (usually tourist heading to the condors) and you also have chance to visit the church. The few local shops are also open around the square so you can stock up with goodies.

We were here very early in the morning on our way to Condors' Cross, but the village was all ready for the tourist buses! Lots of local handicraft stalls, girls dressed in local Andean costumes, music, dancing etc. The most striking thing here is the church, which occupies one side of the square, and its tower is propped up with wooden scaffolding following damage by the last minor earthquake. Inside the church is rich & beautiful, in marked contrast to the poor & drab surroundings outside.

The day we arrived, there was a festival in progress with a parade and markets so it was full of dancing and music. Delightful!

You're not going to visit Yanque just to see the church, but you can get a great photo of the church with the erupting volcano in the background.
At the moment the church hasn't been fully repaired and us being supported by wooden poles.
