This tall and slender lighthouse stands on the promentary off the Avenida da Liberdade in Matosinhos, near Porto and is worth having a walk around. Great stroll and a February day in the winter sunshine.

On our September visit to Oporto, we toured several lighthouses in the area, and the northern most was the Farol de Leça – the Lighthouse at Leça. Unlike it’s counterparts, a bit to the south, the Farol de Leça is a spindly structure, but unlike many, it was built in the 1920's, and began operation in 1926. We did not get to tour the actual lighthouse, as it is surrounded by the operational and support buildings, but just gazing up at this 140' structure was impressive, and especially as it has been in service for almost 100 years. Obviously, the more modern construction techniques allowed for a more “delicate” structure, so it visually stands out from all of the rest of the much older lighthouses, which we visited. Definitely a must see, if one has any interest in lighthouses, and maritime structures, and especially in Portugal, a “sea faring” country. This structure is impressive.…
