Here you will find the Shrine of Confucius, the Shrine of Shinno and the site of Shoheizaka College. It is a beautiful shrine area in the beautiful community of Yushima. There were wonderful sculptures on the day I visited.

Located very close to Ochanomizu station or Akihabara, it's very quiet place in noisy city. Enjoy the atmosphere of old and saint place. 御茶ノ水駅や秋葉原からも近いのに、突然とても静かな不思議な空間が現れます。 数々の絵馬が祈り人の想いを想起させてくれます。

we visited it just before closing and there were 2 people only. Very different from other colorful red shreins. It looks almost like black and white buildings in wild forest. feels very secluded and impressive. 5 min. walk from Kanda Myojin. closest metro station is Ochanomizu Station. When you walk from the station you cross the river and view is... More

Close to the Ochanomizu station and the Kanda Myojin shrine, this temple is fairly big and the yard area got us some nice photos.

This is a very simple shrine, that offers very little to see inside it. Still, the building itself is nicely kept and it does offer a tranquil timeout from the bustling streets of Tokyo.

This location is across the street from a shrine with heavier traffic. At the heart of a park area, nestled between trees, this Shrine to Confucius is quiet, and even colored more darkly than the other bright red shrines in the area. This is definitely more a place to meditate and think peacefully. The large bins collecting water carry a... More

Confucianism was only important in Japan during the Edo time; in contrary to all the rest of East Asia, it has faded away completely. This is the main former Confucius temple and Confucian academy; it is now a Shinto shrine and all rituals here are Shinto. And it is not considered an especially strong shrine in its specific area (luck... More

Yushima Seido is a beautiful, peaceful spot in the heart of Tokyo, a short walk from the Ochanomizu Japan Rail station. Highly recommended, it only takes a short time to visit.

This a large temple complex that deserves a walk around but disappointing because there isn't any English signage to help you understand the history or the doctrine. A large sculpture of Confucius dominates the lower level ... this unfortunately close to a smoking area and hang out area for a few down & outs. Best of all was the most... More

I am fond of this shrine, because it stands less than a block from where I live in Tokyo during my long stays in the city. Every day I walk through its quiet grounds on my way to Ueno Park or the metro. Sometimes, I come across a wedding in progress or a festival that entices me to stay. For... More

Staying in Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda

Neighbourhood Profile
Ochanomizu / Akihabara / Kanda
Ochanomizu boasts its academic foundations starting with Yushima Seido, the birthplace of modern day Japanese education. The area has kept its college town feel with several university campuses. If you head towards Jinbocho, you'll find musical instrument and sports equipment shops, and an area of used bookstores for students and anyone interested in literature and the arts. Akihabara is well-known for its computer and electronic goods stores, and is now hugely popular as the must-visit mecca for people interested in anime and games. Kanda is an office district where you can find loads of reasonably priced izakayas popular with professionals who stop to eat and drink before making their way home.
