Address
Neighbourhood: Ginza / Tokyo Nihonbashi
Ginza is famous for being a trendy hotspot, but it's also a downtown area with shops that were founded over a hundred years ago. Department stores and luxury boutiques line the route from Nihonbashi to Ginza. It's a long established tradition to shop and stroll while the road is closed to traffic. Luxury hotels, world class cuisine from talented chefs, and a collection of glitzy clubs will make this area popular with anyone looking for a night out.

Fukutoku Shrine is a hidden gem, nestled amidst the towering office buildings of the city. Its compact size and tranquil atmosphere offer a refreshing contrast to the bustling urban environment surrounding it. Despite its modest appearance, the shrine exudes a sense of calm and spirituality, making it a peaceful retreat for visitors seeking a moment of respite from the city's hustle and bustle.

Off the beaten track shrine in the northern part of Tokyo towards Chuo. Can be reached by taking the Chuo red line - JR pass works.

A tiny, colourful, modern looking shrine hidden in the busy commercial area of Nihonbashi. I was told that the temple dated back to over 1000 years ago. The place has obviously been refurbished and modernised. The modern and colourful outlook now fit in quite well with the surrounding buildings. Its location makes it convenient for office workers to come in to pay their respects whenever they can find the time. I would recommend dropping by to have a look at this modern temple when in the neighbourhood.

This is one of the temples are quite old in Tokyo, with its history since the 8th century, and used as a place of worship for them to earn a fortune from various activities that they do.

A small but very beautiful little shrine in the middle of the city. Nearby are a lot of nice restaurants, so it's perfect for a 5-minute visit before or after eating.

It is unclear as to when this shrine was built, but based on summary accounts, enshrinement had already taken place here between 859 and 876 AD. This shrine originally had a strong following with military commanders, and on August 8th, 1590, the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu came to Edo (ancient Tokyo), where he first made his pilgrimage to the shrine in that same August. From that day forth he would go on to visit the shrine many more times.

What interested me most about this tiny shrine to the harvest deity Inari, was how it used to be among the fields but is now squeezed into a tiny corner of a Tokyo street, surrounded by tall tower blocks. There is a mural illustrating what it used to be like. It is a few blocks down from Nihonbashi bridge. Probably not worth a specific trip but worth stopping by if you are there.

It was amazing to see a small Shinto shrine among the skyscrapers of Nihonbashi. An amazing juxtaposition of modern high-rise buildings and a small ancient 1000-year-old temple in the center of Tokyo.
