If you want to know more about the traditional Japanese way of life, Sunamachi Ginza is one of the best spots in Tokyo. I believe you are really excited to see locals enjoying living everyday life there.

Sunamachi Ginza (砂町銀座) is a famous traditional shopping street. It is featured on Japanese TV shows at times although it’s hardly known to foreign tourists.
If you love ‘Tukiji Market’ or ’Ameyoko shopping street’, you might like this street as well that is full of locals.

There are over 180 shops in this street where you can buy take-out foods . (e.g. sushi, tempura, yakitori, *takoyaki, *oden, fried foods, Japanese prepared food, tofu, Japanese cake, Turkish kebab, Chinese steamed buns, Seoul food).

In addition to that, you can find some Japanese style restaurants there that serve delicious Japanese foods such as “kaiten-zushi” (conveyor belt sushi bar), “yakiniku”, “ramen” and so forth. These restaurants offer you them with lower prices compared to other shops in Tokyo.

I really hope this information will help you and you will enjoy Sunamachi Giza, the traditional Japanese shopping street!!

*takoyaki It is a popular street food made of eggs and flour which contains octopus pieces and a mix of veggies.

*oden It is a dish in which a variety of ingredients such as tofu, eggs, white radish, fried fish paste, and potatoes are boiled together in a large pot of seasoned fish broth.

How to get there

From Shinjuku Station
Take the Shinjuku Subway Line directly from Shinjuku Station to Nishiojima Station, which takes 23 minutes and costs 267 yen. From the Nisiojima St, you can reach Sunamachi Ginza in a 10 minutes’ walk.

From Tokyo Station
Walk to Otemachi station (5minites) and take the Tozai Subway Line to Minamisunamachi Station (11 minutes), which costs only 195 yen. Sunamachi Ginza can be reached in a 15 minutes’ walk from Minamisunamachi Station.

I live near here, but I recommend not only for locals but also visiters! You'll feel the place is so busy and people are so energetic. Not so far, if you take a subway and bus, from SkyTree, the tallest towar in Japan. The closest subway station is "Nishi-Ojima" of Toei-subway.

The street called "Sunamachi Ginza Shotengai" in Japanese. You'll find the entrance sign below a trafic light. The street lasts for about 1.1 kms long!! Seems like a China town in other countries'.

There are about 180 stores and they're all unique!
Here are my recommendations!

<>
Sakura-Yu is "sento", a pablic bath.
It's sooo confortable once you get accustomed to take a bath in pablic (no body cares about your body and no body stares at you!) . The bath is huge and hot enough to be soon relaxed!!
Also, the bath is clean! But, there is no free towel, shanpoo and body soap, so make sure to bring your own shanpoo and staffs. Otherwise, you have to buy them there.
cost:460JPY
open:15:15-24:00
closed: on 2nd and 4th Thursday

This is one of my favorite bakery shops! You'll be welcomed by big Totoro stuaffed dall , famous caractor of Hayao Miyazaki animation. There are many kinds of Japanese bread, like "An-pan", red seewt beans in it, "Carry-pan" obviously carry in and "Cream-pan", custard cream is in it! Try some of them and you'll feel traditional Japanese taste.
open: 10:00-19:00
closed: Sunday

I cannot name all deli shops on the street! Even I havn't finished all delis yet! Come and try some deli, such as "Oden", Japanese traditional "pot cuisine" .You can enjoy boiled egg, Japanese radish and konjac in pot!
Have you tried "Tsukemono", Japanese pickles?Once you have it, you'll never forget its strong salty taste!
Needless to say, there are "Yakirori" and "Tempra" shops and also taste good! You can eat them while you are walking through the street.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you to come and enjoy very Japanese traditionals!!
Definitely love this place's atmosphere and people!
There is no roof for the street, though, even if it rains, it's still good because you can enjoy not-crowded street!

I've noticed many people here writing about the REAL Ginza. There are hundreds of mock "Ginza"s in Japan. In English, it might be somewhat like "Main Street". A town's most "up-and-happening place" (a Main Street) is called Ginza. These mock Ginzas usually do not have high-end quality department stores and imported brand good shops. People are making fun of "their" version of Ginza--and such places are usually full of cheap and local businesses. Sunamachi is not a ritzy place, and everyone knows it, so naming it (Sunamachi) Ginza is like an inside joke that all Japanese get! --Just thought I'd let people here on the forum know!

I was staying in Hotel Villa Fontaine Shiomode & at night i could see the glittering lights of Ginza shopping street.I set off one afternoon & walked down this area which was only 15 minutes from my Hotel.I chose a saturday afternoon after 1200 hrs as till 1700 hrs the whole area is declared as a `pedestrian Heaven`with no motor vehicles allowed! It is regarded as one of the most expensive real estate area in the world with one Sq meter land costs nearly ten million Yen!

It has numerous Dept Stores, boutiques, restaurants, coffee houses with every leading brand name in the world being present there.Among the illustrious stores is the Mitsukoshi bldg with 12 floors & its history goes back to 1673 when it was opened!Other interesting sites that i visited were the Kabukiza Theater which has Japan`s famous Kabuki shows every day.Another one is the Yurakucho Gado -Shita Dining area which is beneath the Yurakucho station.Stretching over 700 metres dozens of restaurants are built in to brick arches ranging from small eating joints to beer halls & more upscale wine bars! There is also a police museum & a big Sony building.

A bit off the beaten Ginza path but interesting enough to deviate for half an hour or so. I myself didn't really find too much that would interest me enough to buy it and the restaurants are perhaps not to my personal liking... but again, it's worth taking a small sidetrip, wandering aimlessly, and grabbing a few photos.

This area of Tokyo is well worth a visit. Lots of different types of shops - Ginza seems to be the fine r area for tourists to shop. I bought my wife a ring here - all the staff are very helpful.

On the weekend, the main streeets are closed to traffic, allowing people to stroll around. Restaurants put tables, chairs and umbrellas out in the street, and there are street performers and musicians. A great atmosphere. And you can peer in shop windows as well.
