This is a compact museum with a lot of information about the famous haiku poet Matseo Basho (1644-1694); his life, his travels, and his work. There is a nice garden next to the museum and an annex memorial and statue at the riverside (5-10 minutes walking). The museum could approve their exposure and impact by translating texts into English and other languages.

As a fan of Basho, I was looking forward to finding out more about him. While the museum was easy to find and we received a short biography in english, everything else was in Japanese. Oh well!

A small museum about the famous Japanese poet Basho. There were some leaflets available in English but all the displays were in Japanese only. In the backyard is a small garden with some stone tablets and a memorial.

On our tour of Japan discovered this “memorial hall “ existed in Tokyo quite by chance by seeing it marked on a street map when looking for something else ! This is a very small somewhat out of the way museum and literary community centre celebrating the work of one Of Japan’s greatest writers namely the 17th Century Edo Period Haiku poet and “travel” writer Basho . As something of a fan of Basho’s work I was keen to visit so we went to explore this facility alongside the Sumida River not far from the Edo-Tokyo Museum in a residential district where Basho lived for a considerable period of time. To be honest this is a specialist interest place where it’s two floor galleries ( admittance by a modest fee) are fascinating -with books of Basho’s works and information about his life , travels and times -but all in Japanese . There was an English leaflet available on request , which was quite helpful but short . So we resorted to Google translate to understand more of what was presented in the various display cases . We did find the experience rewarding although we certainly didn’t gain the insight a Japanese speaker would do and it would be nice if there were English captions throughout . The Hall is enhanced by a small rear garden backing onto the river and more significantly (just a few minutes along the river nearby) a memorial garden containing an impressive statue of the poet overlooking the river ( see accompanying pictures ) . There is no gift shop as such but the ticket office does sell a few pieces of merchandise including a couple of t shirts . I bought one with a Basho Haiku printed on it in Japanese and was delighted to be kindly presented with a piece of paper which had an English translation of the poem on it .
I therefore found the Basho Memorial Hall very worthwhile but its probably only of real interest if , like me, you have an enthusiasm for Japanese Literature . If so it’s an unusual treat to seek out .

This is a small museum that focuses on Basho Mastuo who was a Haiku Poet who used to live where the museum is now. It showcases his work but if you cannot read Japanese it is very hard to get anything out of this museum as the English information is just a pamplet that tells you his life story but does not even include any of his poems. The only way we found the museum is that there was a information board on the street just outside so we could see that we were outside the museum.

Famous Japanese writer recalled that comes from this area. This museum provides an overview of past life Basho with a variety of his work.

Basho Mastuo, being a famous HAIKU poet in Edo Period, who travelled in Japan and made a large number of HAIKU, once lived in Tokyo, then called EDO. This center is built up to let visitors know BASHO.And, the location is supposed to be the place where Basho lived in.
You could be known the history of Basho and his letters. Location is difficult to find for visit.
A little walk from the nearest station.Small, but very useful to know him, if you could understand Japanese since little information stated other than Japanese.
