About
This winegrower's house, built on the southern slopes of the Domaine de Saint-Cloud at the end of the 17th century, was converted into a country retreat in the early 19th century. It belonged to novelist Honore de Balzac, and subsequently became the property of Leon Gambetta, the founder of the Third Republic, who bought the house in 1878 and died here four years later. The Maison des Jardies has retained its original decor and today recalls the life and work of this great statesman and combative republican. The house of Gambetta and Balzac is animated by an exciting Guide that leads you from one story to the next. It immerses you in two different universes that have this house in common. Many objects, furniture punctuate this visit which made me discover things I did not know.
With warm thanks to this captivating Guide.

Honoré de Balzac was not a member of the "noblesse" and his father was responsible for furnishing the Republican then Napoleon's French Army. But Balzac's mother was from a "nobel" family and had to hide this "de" particle. So, the 20 years young writer escaped out of the family and was a self-made novelist but he knew his first success only by 30 with "Physiologie du mariage" and "La Peau de Chagrin", this fantastic novel which anticipates "Portrait of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde ... Balzac had bigger eyes than the belly : he ate his fortune before it was sure ... And tried again by becoming a printer, an editor, buying and losing silver mine actions in Sardaigne Island, before he got one day a letter of a female reader, a Polish countess, Madame Hanska, in Russian Ukraine. The correspondence lasted over 15 years till she was widdowed. They married in the Ukraine, came back to Paris next to the last house near the Champs Élysées (rue Balzac, Paris 8th) after losing "The Jardies" in Sèvres (near the RER station Sèvres-Ville d'Avray Rive Gauche direction Versailles Rive Gauche) because of debts, living then in the rue Raynouard (Paris 16th) which is today "The Maison Balzac" just above the Turkish Embassy in the nice neighborhood of Passy (Paris 16th) not so far away from the Eiffel Tower on the other riverside of the River Seine ... All these places are very quiet and deserve a visit in the Paris area ...

Beautifully preserved rooms, primarily based on the life and times of Leon Gambetta. A great way to better appreciate why there are so many places in France with Gambetta's name, including a Paris metro station. Excellent docents who know anything and everything about Gambetta - the house tour is guided by national monuments employees. For anyone who is interested in the Franco-Prussian War and about the status of Alsace, and basically about the rather complicated French political history between the 1860s and 1880s - you will be quite satisfied with what you see and hear. There are fewer than five rooms available to visit, and most of the time there is to listen to the descriptions and explanations of the docents. Some nice and well-marked woodland walks in the area as well.

An intimate place that traces one of the great pages of the History of France. This house built by Balzac was bought by Gambetta. To do with the family.
