We were doing a fab little treasure trail around Guisborough, which finished at the war monument, just outside the entrance to Guisborough Priory. We had a couple of hours to spare and noticed that the Priory was free entry to decided to have a quick look around to take a few photos. We were really pleasantly surprised to discover a lovely little set of gardens! We explored the priory ruins, which didn't take very long at all, but then saw a little pathway going off into the woods... We followed this and just kept discovering more and more little areas in the gardens. It was so much fun to explore for us two adults, and kids would have great fun here I think. From majestic trees, pretty flowers, a fairy garden, bug house, wooden carvings, moss covered stones, jumping logs/stepping stones, benches etc etc. So much to see in the gardens. Considering entrance is free there is no excuse not to go! although donations are welcome as the gardens are only kept open and in such great condition by the hard work of volunteers.

We visited the priory on a very misty and damp day, but still marvelled at its beauty. It did mean that we were pretty much the only ones there. The place has an incredible energy - including the gardens which have been lovingly and playfully designed. There are many of the original priory stones that have been laid to rest in the gardens, in beautiful patterns, now covered in a vivid green moss. The large ring of trees in the garden again feels full of energy, and evokes thoughts of rituals and tales gone by. The lady keeper of the gate was full of information and really friendly and told us that many of the ruins/stones were used within the town. I would thoroughly recommend a visit whatever the weather - stunning and rich in history ... and free!

It’s a wee while since we visited Guisborough but, as usual, we went for a stroll round the impressive ruins of the priory. The ruins themselves are well worth seeing, and the information boards give a fine idea of what the priory looked like when it was intact. But there is much more to enjoy here, and I’ve always liked the fact that locals almost treat the grounds as a town centre park where mums can chat while their children play on the wide, grassy area. There are also nice paths to stroll through the small woodland area and the gardens, which are very well maintained. I also like the way that, instead of leaving all the excess pieces of historic masonry in piles, or locked up in some storage facility, they have used them here to create rockeries and attractive designs throughout the grounds. It is very well done indeed and the garden staff and volunteers should be proud of what they have achieved.
