The sanctuary is build deep in the ground. You can really feel the presence of spirituality here. Go if you can. Beware of opening and closing times. They close for long lunch periods.

We visited the underground church and found that we were in the middle of the celebration of mass. Although I have no specific religious belief, I found the combination of the service and the natural location to be very moving.

The Santuario is located underground and is a beautiful underground grotto. I believe that it is handicap accessible, but we took the stairs, and it was was well worth the effort, as there are beautiful frescos that have been, and are being restored on the...More

Descend into history where pilgrims walked to touch and sense a place purported to have experienced sightings of the Archangels. Whatever you believe or don't, this experience is worth the steps into a time forgotten. ( a lift is available - ask). Entering a cave...More

We aren't religious, so this wasn't a pilgrimage, but it's still an interesting historical building underground that incorporates the sacred cave. We were surprised to find it a much easier walk down (and back up) a large staircase, compared to the description in some other...More

It's unique blend of beauty, history, and architecture place San Michele in my personal top ten travel experiences. Descent into the grotto church is steep and arduous, not for the impaired. The reward is a place of worship and succor that ingrains the devotion to...More

We are planning on visiting in May but I haven't been able to locate the hours and if we can advance purchase tickets. Also, we are driving from Bari and wondered if it would be better to take the public bus from Manfredonia. I appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction. I am unable to change the language to English on the official site and I unfortunately don' read Italian. Thank you for your help! Kellye

I recommend also to take the coast road from Barletta, not the toll highway. This April, the road linking the main highway with Manfredonia was in repairs and in very, very bad state. To avoid!
