My friend and I rented bikes for a half a day and rode through the plain to the small town on the other side of the island. Historically interesting as this is supposed to be the oldest continuously cultivated region in the world. The old stone walls still defined the plots of olive trees and vineyards. Other than tourism, this is how the people of Stari Grad support themselves. The ride was easy as the road is flat, but there is a lengthy unpaved section. Fortunately it was not hot and the ride was pleasant but bring water. Glad we did this. Stari Grad was pretty quite as the season was over for the town and even the museums were closed.

In 35 degree heat in August, this was a fairly intense but incredibly beautiful ride. We hired bikes from Rent a Bike / Scooter in Stari Grad and we rode to Vrboska which is a settlement founded in the 15th century on the north coast of the island. We rode past vineyards, olive groves and ancient Greek ruins. The ride was mainly on quiet tracks which avoided cars on fast roads. This was an unforgettable albeit fairly short ride. We only didn’t ride to Jelsa because of the heat.

A lovely day cycling from Stari Grad to Vrboska. A UNESCO world heritage site with some of the oldest continuously cultivated land in the World. Beautiful and virtually flat. Rented the bikes from Hvar unlimited in Stari Grad (70 kuna pp) who helpfully delivered a replacement bike over lunch when the first had a puncture.
