St Stephen’s Church sits in St Stephen’s Square. It replaces a previous church on the same site. We were unable to go in as time did not allow on our tour unfortunately. Architecturally it looked lovely and interesting and we would have liked to see inside.

We will be back for sure soon to see this parish church on our next trip. it looks amazing! Unfortunately we were unable to even peek into the inside because the workers had it locked and no priests were in the area at the time.

What an experience to visit this splendor. If you like to visit than old ornate churches - this one is something else. The Church of St. Stephen, built in 1605, is the parish church of Stari Grad on the island of Hvar in Croatia. It is dedicated to the martyred Pope Stephen I. It stands on the eastern side of a small square, Trg sv. Stjepana, in the historical centre of Stari Grad. Service is in the evenings at 18:00 and Friday at 19:00- It is absolutely stunning. …

St. Stephen’s church is on a square by the same name on Ante Starcevica street, 125m south of the harbor. Construction on the church started in 1605, on the site of a prior 9/10th century cathedral which was severely damaged by the Turks when they burned the town in 1571. The church exterior, designed by Ivan Pomrnic from Korcula, is built from local limestone. The Renaissance/early Baroque façade has a a large central door flanked by two smaller side portals, a rose window above, and a semicircular gable. An adjacent bell tower was built in 1753; its base and ground floor contain large stone blocks recycled from the ancient city walls. A Latin inscription above the bell tower doors states, "where the entrance to the town once was today is the entrance to the church-tower". Inside the tower is a stone relief of a Roman ship from the 2nd century. St. Stephen's church is a large three-nave basilica with a square apse. Inside, windows near the vaulted ceiling illuminate the interior in shades of pale green, blue and grey (somewhat water damaged). There is a beautiful painted and carved Rococo wooden choir. The main altar is from the Venetian workshop of Alessandro Tremignon from 1702. On the south wall of the church is a triptych by F. De Santacroce (1516-1584) depicting Our Lady, St. Jerome and St. John the Baptist. The carved stone baptistery is by Tripun Bokanic (1592). On the north wall is a beautiful black marble Altar of St Cross, is by A. Bruttapello (1773). The square outside the church used to be the main town square. A Roman stone relief of Eros faces the street, to the right of the church. Look for a house on the north side of the square with a sundial and a coat of arms from the Hektorovic family (15th century). The church is open to the public, but hours vary. There is no entry fee, although a donation is appreciated.…
