The highest dune in Europe, a unique landscape with an incredible panoramic view over the ocean, forest and Arcachon Bay but also and more importantly, a living, natural space that needs to be looked after and protected. Since December 2007, the Syndicat Mixte de la Grande Dune du Pilat has been working to protect and preserve this national piece of heritage that belongs to us all. From the top of this giant (109 meters high, 2,7 kilometers long, 500 meters wide), you can see many remarkable sites of the region.

Youngsters and those who are fit have no trouble running up and down this huge dune. But if like me you are a bit older and unfit climbing to the top is hard work. It's worth the effort though - the views from the top, both inland over the forest and out to sea - are fantastic. Take water with... More

I sent two holidays at Dune du Pilat. The first time I was simply amazed by this rock-solid monument built by nature out of sand! Really unique and impressing. It is just great to use the public stairways to the top of the dune or walk besides the official paths to get a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean from the... More

We had a beautiful sunny December day, and decided to visit the big dune. An easy, close drive from Bordeaux, making it a great escape from the big city. We arrived around 9am. There were only a couple of cars in the carpark. We headed off and within a few minutes we were at the base. Nothing prepares you for... More

What people don't tell you, though, is that climbing up there is mental. My calves still hurting and it's been two days. Jokes aside, don't take a backpack or anything, the climbing is pretty tiring. With that said, once you're up there you'll completely forget about everything else because the view is breathtaking. You have two sides, beach and forest... More

Amazing place to visit for the fit and able! Charge for car parking as you leave at barrier. Small gift shops and eateries on way through wooded area leading to the dune. A must see if in the area.

Try to go on the top before sunrise ..; Viewing the sun awake just up th pine is an amazing souvenir. More useful the sundown with sun onto the ocean ... But be ciourageous and try not to walf on stair, it's very difficult ! Enjoy

A great little trip if you are in the area. Giant sand dune over 100m high with fabulous views. We visited in February, which is a refreshing time!......but a lot less people. I imagine it Would be very busy in Summer season. Also in Winter they take down the temporary stairs that help to lessen erosion so in February no... More

We stopped for a few days, and are definitely coming back. Cant wait to learn how to parapente. Arcachon is a cool town nearby, and deserves to be explored more. Highly recommend.
