We visited the German Wine Gate in Schweigen. A very beautiful sight and a great destination with lots of cycling and hiking trails in the region. We would love to come back and would definitely recommend the German Wine Gate.

OK, it's a quite touristy place so you should avoid weekends and public holidays . During weekdays and in the evening it's a tranquil place. The neighboring restaurant has a big open air guestroom were you can enjoy modern local food or just a cup of coffee, tee, beer or, if course, vine. Then whole premises is administrated by the largest vine growers cooperative in Germany which is then owner of the vineshop. Quality of the vines is okay, but there is much more and better to discover in the village itself. Unlike at the private vinegrowers be noted that you have to pay for each tasting zip in that shop. As far as I remember the amount is redeemed when you purchase. On top of the gate you've got a good view on the Palatina vineyards and Alsace. Sometimes even the Black Forest is visible on the horizon.

This was a first trip for my husband, he was in aw, the beauty, the architecture, the history, let us not forget vineyards that stretch to forever it seems and then the fantastic wine. My husband loved it but what floored him the most is when I took him for a walk and he was able to have one foot in France and one in Germany and no passport is needed. :) beautiful area.

The Weintor is a colossal gate marking the beginn of the „German wine route“. It isn’t beautiful at all and somehow doesn’t fit this tiny village. In the buildings next tour, an overly touristy wine shop and some restaurant are housed.

Found this by accident on way to a restaurant. It is situated at the soutern end of the German Wine road. Big selection of local wines and able to taste or have a glass. The staff were very helpful.

Very good food. Great location and great view from the terrace. Much nicer, cozier and cheaper than the "umbrella restaurant" opposite.
