First time was in September 2022 and when I returned with my husband in December 2022 it was a must. We went on a bus tour. There was a grat delay on the highway. Some manifestation or protest of some sort so I presume it was a bit rushed. But good overall. We had a boat ride in the Punchiná Dam. It was a town which they had to vacate and flood in order to create the dam which is part of San Carlos Hydroelectric plant. They export 70% of the power produced. A fantastic project that started in 1978 and was completed in 1984. All the people were re-located in a town that is now called El Nuevo Peñon -sometimes it is spelled Peñol-. The dam has fantastic properties. The infimus Pablo Escobar had a house and a discoteque there. Please remember that that era ended in the early 90s. We are in 2023. That is over 30 years ago! Medellin and surrounding places are SAFE. Famous soccer players own real estate at the dam. It is a great place. The lunch was in a nice restaurant a few meters from the Gran Peñon and well served. The rock is impresive and the views are fantastic. Worth the trip from Medellin.

This monolith reminded me of Devil's Tower in Wyoming, USA. You can hike to a certain point then take the switch back stair to the summit. I didn't, am not nuts. It seemed better to leave the rock alone and gaze upon it's size and placement. Like an iceberg, two-thirds of it is below ground, the remaining third is what you see above ground. And it is allegedly 11 million years old. No UFOs landed on it the day I visited.

Love love LOVED the place. I went as part of a tour group and was given enough time to complete the steps of the peñón.
I do not work out at all and was able to do the steps in approximately 20 minutes, it was kind of difficult for me just because of the height, I’m not use to that heights where I’m from so breathing was a little challenging but all worth it, i promise. Amazing view!
On the top of the rock they have restaurants and shops so you Can spend some good time there. Again I went as part of a tour and saved the time of finding a parking spot and looking up certain information upfront and found that very convenient. You have to visit if in Medellin

This is a must. The climb really isn't that bad. It is a bit tough on the legs climbing around 700 steps but just take your time. I am in my forties and walked up in twenty minutes which included rest stops and to take photographs. The views at the top are worth it.

Climbing the 707 steps to the top is certainly a workout, but well worth the view. The nearby town of Guatepé is quaint & colorful and also worth visiting. You can take a tour from Medellín that includes both and well worth the time & money. Marlon was our tour guide with MAXITOURS & he did a great job. I reserved my tour through my hotel. I paid $94,000 COP with was under $30 US. Breakfast & lunch were included; it was a long day, but worth it.

This attraction is about two to three hours by car from Medellin but worth the drive! ITs a tough drive through mountains and winding roads. When you finally arrive it is worth every bit of the time you spent to get there.
The base has all of your souvenier shops (all owned by the same family) and you have to pay admission to get to climb the stairs (about 3 dollars ). There are 652 stairs to the top for a total of 220 meters climbing....straight up the side of the rock!. The view is great the whole way and gets better as you go higher. Once at the top you can treat yourself to a mango beer as a reward while you take some 360 degree pictures.
You can have dinner afterward at the base that still has a magnificent view of the lake. Additionally, if you drive 20 minutes you get into the quaint town of Guatupe. This is definitely one of my favorite places in Colombia to visit.

We hired a private guide/driver and took us about an hour to get to El Penol rock which is the first stop of the trip. We climbed the rock (about 675 steps), the view on top is breathtaking. At the top there are a few cafes, we walked down and headed to our second stop, the town of guatapé. It is a beautiful town with amazing energy and vibes all around, the art on the houses is very colourful, we finished our trip by visiting a local Coffee farmer who produces amazing quality coffee, we got to pick the coffee ourselves and at the end he packed fresh bags for us

I expected way more from what I saw in pictures. The are in general is completely filthy and neglected. The rock belongs to a private entity and you pay for nothing, yous to climb dirty stairs. On the top there is nothing, just people screaming at you to make you buy things.

A beautiful rock surrounded by beautiful scenery, it’s 700 steps up and in the sun was tuff going but worth it, the views are amazing and we happen to get great clear day. We spent a good hour at the top, there is restaurants and shops to relax and take it all in.
