Web site said that the church was open everyday, gave opening times. we went last Thursday to find that actually it is only open twice a week for services - on Wednesday and Sunday mornings. Wasted trip!!

We stayed outside of Salisbury for 10 days during the summer of 2011 and drove by this church many times. The church is right on the A30 in Wilton which is just a few minutes drive west of Salisbury. Finally I decided that I had to stop and have a look at this unusual building. The church is very unusual in that it looks nothing like any other church you would find in England.
We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon and the place was deserted, which certainly added to the experience. Inside there was a collection box and a guide book available for a small donation. As we wandered through the church we quickly realized that this was no normal church. The designer apparently adored Italian architecture and thus he designed his church to look like something you might find in Tuscany. There is a large mosaic of Christ above the chancel which immediately catches you eye. There is a button near the door which illuminates the mosaic for a few minutes. Throughout the church there are surprising treasures, such as marble columns taken from a pre-Christian temple in Italy, 13th to 16th century stained glass taken from churches in France and the "Capocci Shrine" which originally stood in Rome. Outside the architecture continues to amaze. The columns of the cloister are incredible as each one is different from the rest. Around back there is a pleasant churchyard with many weathered head stones.
I highly recommend visiting this Church if you happen to be in the Salisbury area. You won't be disappointed - and you won't see anything like this at Salisbury Cathedral.

This enormous Italianate church was built in1845 and the interior is a sight to behold, especially the Byzantine apse in gorgeous mozaics. No specific opening times but there is a busy programme of musical events. For all musical events in Salisbury, obtain a free copy of 'Music in Salsibury' from the Tourist Information Centre in Fish Row. There is limited parking to the rear of the church or at a couple of public car parks in Wilton. TIP: the car park in South Street is large and free! There is a toilet inside the church and disabled access is good.

An interesting and unusual style church in Wilton. Well worth stopping to visit if in the area. Walk around the outside as well as visiting inside and soaking up the atmosphere.

Interesting church in the middle of a picturesque village, on the day we visited we had an enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteer, this is not somewhere you need to spend a long time time but is makes a fascinating change from English country houses.

Magnificent church from the outside. On entering you press a lighting button, on the left of the main door or on the left of the bell tower door, which lights up the mosaics behind the main alter. Worth a visit and very close to Wilton House.

I never thought I could say a church took my breath away, but this certainly did. The exterior is amazing, for a moment I forgot I was in England. I can understand why its called the 'Italianate' church. Beautiful and well worth a visit.

What a stunning church to find in such an English place. It is totally an Italian masterpiece.
They will never build such things again.

We are moving to the area and my husband lived there as a child. The building has the most beautiful architecture and interior, I was overwhelmed by its spendour. I am not a church goer but have to admit my visit was a very moving and peaceful experieince. So glad I actually went inside and looked and felt the serenity it offered. I have a strong feeling I will go back once we are settled in our new home.

Pretty much a waste of time. You don’t get anywhere near it and tours are a fortune. If the weather is bad you will know a new level of suffering. No one has any fun here and you can carry your disappointment home in a bucket.

Sorry you were so disappointed.
I don't understand what you mean by "don't get anywhere near" and "tours are a fortune". We don't offer individual tours and you can there is FREE access to the church 364.5 days per year! Maybe you were with a tour guide from somewhere else??

Hi, on the back of the previous Q&A, assuming it is open, does anyone know when the church closes on Saturdays? I cannot find any info online. Thank you very much.
Written April 10, 2016
Not sure about Saturday's, in particular, as visited on a Monday morning. The impression was that it is accessible most times. Just make sure not to miss the opportunity, when in the area.
Written April 11, 2016
It's usually open until 5pm on Saturday
