The route is extremely well signposted and easy to follow. There are some water points along the way though you'll need to take a collapsible bucket as most are taps. Some lovely views and glorious canters but it's very hilly and steep in places, you'll need a fit horse. Lots of the paths are also very flinty/ stoney and there... More

This is a fantastic route for walking and cycling. Walked it all (98 miles) years ago in a 3-day weekend in pretty gloomy and foggy weather, as training for the Ten Tors challenge. I always had good memories despite the weather and the toughness of what we set ourselves that time. Done more leisurely this is a moderate terrain for... More

There are few better opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation than a long walk. English national trails take it to a new level. In the bracing air along the Seven Sisters, the prominent chalk cliffs overseeing the English Channel, I encounter a fellow hiker who recommends a 13th-century inn in Alfriston as a perfect first night‘s stay. Later, in the gloaming... More

Well signposted, even for someone with no navigational skills. Tracks and paths in great condition, only having the occasional friendly mountain biker overtake. Well worth the hike up the hill to see both the sea, the South Downs and the North Downs in the distance. Choose the weather wisely, chalk would be a slippery nightmare in the wet.

Was with a walking group hiking the South Downs . The walk covered fields , windmills and ended in the beautiful town of Lewes . Loved the trek as it had stunning views of the South Downs .

I live on the side of the South Downs in the beautiful and very old Sussex village of Steyning. The trail isn't far from me and I feel so privileged to be near it. It is just over 106 miles long and mostly along the top of a long line of chalk land hills and downland. Whether its a short... More

We took a small section from Amberly to Steyning and were stunned by the views in all directions taking in the beautiful Downs to the sea and the Isle of Wight. While walking we saw buzzards, kites and kestrels as well as smaller birds and butterflies. I recommend taking stout boots, a map and plenty of water. There are watering... More

Fantastic views, an easy walk and excellent way markers. We had sunshine and rain. Could do with fewer bikers whizzing by, by a minor distraction from the views.

Based in Steyning with the South Downs Way 100yards from the holiday cottage. Most routes walkable in bad weather. Generally great views on either side of the South Down ridges.

I have walked the South Downs Way in both directions and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The views over the soft rolling downs are truly breathtaking. From Winchester to Eastbourne, 109 miles in total, are amazing. But there are also many villages nestled in the folds of the Downs if you wander off the beaten tracks for some refreshments. Take time... More
