We were told to visit Castle Acre if we were in the area. It is a very pretty little village with a good pub. The narrow road to the castle is signposted. The car park is at the bottom of the hill. The site is well worth exploring even if it does involve rather a few steps. Best of all it is free. This is unlike the Priory in the village where we felt the price for admission was rather high for what it offered.
If you enjoyed the visit be sure to visit Castle Rising !

Substantial remains of a castle with impressive defensive walls. This is another part of the medieval village experience linking with the Priory. Inside the walls is an extensive area which would have provided shelter / protection in times of trouble. Plenty of defensive walls to explore. Limited parking.

Lovely castle ruins. We went mid week and there was plenty of room in the small car park. I would imagine this is packed at weekends and Bank Holidays
We had a great walk around and also chatted with some locals as RAF Marham planes put on a nice display for us

We stayed literally across the road from the ruins and kept going back as we enjoyed them so much. Free entry. They are very much ruins with earthworks but some good signs explaining how it would have been. Lovely to walk around. Very peaceful. A little rough underfoot as one would expect so just be aware and careful. Highly recommended.

A real gem great for exploring and interesting historical facts. Accessibility a little tricky as undulating narrow paths and steps. Bring a picnic and enjoy the views and walk (6.5 miles)

Been today to the castle and then walked up through the village to the priory (which was closed) on google maps the ruins doesn’t seem to have a post code, it’s PE32 2XB or see photo for what 3 word location for free car park. Had a nice walk around the castle ruins with the dogs exploring and saw fair few rabbits. We then walked up through the village and saw the Bailey gate and then past the church to the priory. Sadly it was closed so we couldn’t go in, but found a way to see it from the next door field. As you pass the church, there is a road called south acre road on the left go down here and a few meters down on the right is a hole in the hedge with a small walk through a wooded area which leads into a field, from here you can walk across the field and walk the perimeter of the priory ruins.

I drove my boyfriend up here as he'd never been before and I find the village alone a nice peaceful area to walk around. The castle is just a bonus. It's so nice to see a place where history is more important than money. It has beautiful views from up top and information boards that really paint a picture of how it used to be.

Good walk around the remains, information on the ruins so you can imagine what it would have been like. Dogs loved running around with the children. We went in the rain, a fairly heavy shower, just didn't want to sit in the car! It was fun, enjoyed by dogs and the children, we were all laughing about it, the wind was strong too, just added to the feel of the place!

Lovely place to visit and spend half a day. Great to take a picnic to eat whilst enjoying the view! Castle Acre is a lovely village with lots to see. I recommend visiting the Priory and stopping for a drink at The Ostrich.

This site is a fascinating 12th century castle. All open air and welcoming to dogs. Informative signage and easy access (steps.and slopes). Park in the second car park, the first one is for the village hall. The adjacent field is great for walking the dogs- large open fenced grassland.

How much is it to get in and park
Written May 28, 2017
The car park at the castle is free, from recollection, as is the castle itself. The abbey ruins at the other end of the village charges for entry.
