About
Pinuccio Sciola, world famous sculptor and still a resident of San Sperate suggested in the 60s to turn the village into an open air museum, sort of a skansen by putting muralsonto the walls of the buildings. The advice was taken and today you could visit one of the most fascinating villages in the world!

An artists' village, as you can see from the various murals, various studios and giardino sonare and giardino fantastico. In the center in the park with kiosk you will also see various statues and a Fred Flinstone theater.
The village offers little coherence for the artists, unfortunately we went by artist's car, you would rather walk part of the way, but perhaps it is because we are off-season (October). But the workshops and giardinos remain worth a visit, (we visited a ceramics studio, Giampaolo Mameli) but the village could make more of them. And for murals (murales) also take a look in Baressa. But the studios are fun to visit!

Great little village with surprises round every corner.
Start at the San Sperate information centre , ( on the corner of Via Cagliari and via Risorgimento ) where you can buy an audio guide for three euros per person. You get to keep the headphones. Then you get a map and follow the map with your audio guide. We pressed lots of buttons and it took us approximately 2 1/2 hours to get round, not including a lunch break.
Look out for the biscuit shop on the route. Biscuits were particularly amazing.
There are lots of different murals, sculptures, artwork, decorated walls et cetera all round the village. It’s a lovely place to while away a few hours .
Don’t miss the singing garden, which has a separate entrance fee of five euros per person, and is well worth the 40 minutes of guided tour and demonstration of how the singing stones work.

From the bus parking place we walked the main street of the town and we saw the many nice drawings on the walls, it was very quiet place until we arrived to the museum.

We were driven by Alessandro himself to San Sperate. There he told us a lot about the Murales, different kind of paintings and pictures on the outside walls of the houses in the Village. It was just one big public museum, incredible. Because of his information, also about the painters themselves, it was very interesting. And that he is a nice guy, also was pleasant. This trip was combined with a visit to the Giardino Sonore, in the same village. See my comment on this topic. I will never forget this trip, it was really interesting. Thanks Alessandro!

San Sperate was the first stop on a shore excursion from the Norwegian Epic. The town is covered with murals. As the murals age, they are replaced with new murals by new artists. My wife and I found this very interesting. The last stop on our walk through town was at The Sound City. This is an area full of stone carved by Pinuccio Sciola. What makes it unusual is that the artwork is played like an instrument. The sounds are fantastic. We were fortunate enough to get a guided tour by Pinuccio's daughter and then a concert, of sorts, by Picunnio himself at the end of our tour. Since my wife is a musician, this was an unexpected highlight of the tour. We would highly recommend visiting The Sound City in San Sperate, if you are fortunate enough to visit Sardinia.

In the village of San Sperate many of the buildings are decorated with murals or hung with sculptures. Some of these are by well known artists. Of particular interest is the sculpture gallery of Pinuccio Sciola. His sculptures, carved from stone, can be played like musical instruments. If you are lucky, as we were, the sculptor may be present and will demonstrate his art.

We were lucky enough to be taken here by friends in the village. What an amazing experience. I would urge anyone who is in the area to try and see these beautiful stones, the carvings and hear them sing.
These stones, set in a garden fill the senses and for me was an awe inspiring experience. we shall certainly be going back.
Take time to enjoy.

San Sperate was totally disappointing - the murals are not nearly as nice as they are made out to be. The “village” is pretty nasty - definitely skip this stop.

We stopped here just to see the murals, they were nice, but we have seen better ones at Tinnura. The best bit was when an old man who invited us to his yard to see his prized flower the Aristolochia. He was such a sweet old man and the plant was amazing.
