The Maginot Line is mostly thought as been a line from Switzerland along the Rhine to about the river Meuse, however this is also the Maginot Line and actually the only line that did what it was designed to do: keep out invaders.
In this case the Italians in June 1940.
It must have been a titanic work and it still is a remarkable feat that this has been built inside a mountain in the 1930's. Well maintained it can still be visited today.

It was perhaps a stroke of good luck that the museum was still open end of September, for a special promotion event. It is a wonderful experience to be inside such a defensive construction. I remember my visit to another Maginot fort (Ouvrage Grande Hackenberg in Lorraine) and saw a lot of analogies. This fort is smaller but impressive anyway. The long underground corridors, the figthing stands where the metal of the guns and munition transports is still in good condition although a bit rusty. A must have seen for people interested in military history. This is where the French fought off a 10 fold Italian invading force in the spring of 1940!

We passed the site while out mountain biking, and came back a couple of days later (it is open every day apart from Monday from 2-6pm. We spent about an hour wandering through the rooms of the different parts of the fort, and the friendly guy on the desk even gave us an English guide to what all the rooms are. There is still a lot of equipment in the rooms so you can get a sense of their use (I like others I've been to which are just the empty shell), along with sounds and some basic but effective staging with manikins etc. at 6 euro each, we thought we got excellent value. If you were into war stuff, the museum has heaps more things to take your interest.

A surprising, excellent and moving museum, easy to walk to from Sospel and wonderfully cool on a hot day! Highly recommended for all ages.

Bonjour,
Les photos sont-elles autorisées dans le fort ?

We are planning to visit on Sunday 20th September I believe it is open from 2pm - 6pm is this correct and do we need to book in advance?
Written August 31, 2015
It was open every day but Monday in July and August, but I am not sure what happens in September. It gets a lot quieter after the main holidays. Best to contact the local information centre in Sospel. There is no need to prebook (or ability to do so possibly!), it's not exactly on the beaten track.
