We were not expecting to find such a beautiful and imposing cathedral in the small village of Sospel. It was deserted when we visited on a hot afternoon in August and it provided some respite from the heat. There are beautiful frescoes and it's certainly worth a visit. The bell tower looks very old. Recommended!

Sospel is a super town, full of history, stunning views and lovely old buildings.
The cathedral is huge, sat in a large square with interesting tiling on the floor and pastel coloured houses either side.
The cathedral itself has recently been refurbished and looks amazing. Some interesting side chapels
Appears to be open the whole time.

Typical very large cathedral for such a small town, with very ornate alter and painted ceilings. Series of steps to entrance are somewhat uneven. Worth a short visit. Fort Roch which we have visited in previous years, now only has limited opening but is well worth visiting.

While the rare tabernacle is being restored there was still some lovely art work to enjoy. Opened after 10.30 am and closes for lunch.

This place is a real gem. The first year we visited Sospel we didn’t even know it existed! It’s tucked away from the main street but so worth the detour. Cool, calm and beautiful. It’s a lovely peaceful place with some excellent history and gorgeous paintings inside .

The church is a gem in Sospel. Paintings on the ceiling and a guilded alter. One would not expect a church this large in a village of Sospels size.

The town itself is in the foothills of the alps and about 18 kilometers north of Menton which itself is on the coast forming part of the French Riveria.

We didn't have much time to visit the cathedral as we had a train to catch. Sospel's inhabitants are very proud of their cathedral and they a right to be. All the renovation work is remarkable, finely done with a lot of taste.

The baroque Cathedral of Saint Michel built in the 17th century faces across a big square lined with arcaded and pastel painted houses. The building seems out of proportion to the size of the town. It was built by the town’s residents after an outbreak of the Black Death in gratitude for their survival. The roman style belltower that is to the right of the facade dates from the 13th century and belonged to a previous church that stood here. The decoration around the altar and ceiling frescoes are particularly notable.

Sometime during the history of this town they must have made an awful lot of money, my wife read that it was a border town on the salt trade route, because this cathedral seems out of place. It is said it was built after the plague by a grateful parish. It is italian baroque in all its splendor, well restaured also. The place in front with the two chapels and arcade buildings forms a beautiful whole. No doubt perfect for the concerts that are organized during summer.
