Knowing the history of this bridge - as a point for imposing taxes on salt - explains the narrow roadway and towering gatehouse. It’s a nice old (restored after WW2 damage) bridge that links the two halves of Sospel. Worth a look and walking over if you are visiting.

Sospel speaks for itself, happy to say it has not changed much over the last 20 years.
A must go place

Sospel has changed hands a number of times over the centuries and what you see when you visit this charming little town is something that is quite different from any of the villages on either side of the French/Italian border. The influences of both shine through in awondeful blend that dilutes neither. Ad to that the undeniable influence of the Alps as a backdrop and you have something quite unique. We will be going there again!

The 11th century bridge looks like it has been designed and built by 5 year olds, and it’s all the more charming for that. A very photogenic town with some incredible aged buildings, well worth stopping off, particularly if like us, you need to get your head together after the Col de Turini drive. Bear in mind that all restaurants are shut from the end of lunch service to 7pm when they re-open, although there are supermarkets and some snack bars.

Eye catching bridge, in heart of this small town. Good to photograph or from which to take some ! Rounded, cobble-stoned surface, so take your time crossing, especially if wet (or icy) !

Sospel is not so far from Monaco, Nice and the French Riviera but it feels like stepping a long way back in time.
The village is very old and very pretty, a mix of French, Italian and Swiss influences.
The bridge is 12th century. Open to walk across but there's no museum and you can't enter the tower.
The river is wide at this point and the backdrop of the mountains is lovely.
A must see village.

We had no plan to visit the vieux pont and didn't even know its building could be visited. It's a free attraction and a lovely lady is present to hapily give additional information. We were enchanted by the visit and the heritage preservation spririt of Sospel

Not much can be said about this bridge that others already haven't done so. It's nice, the river is cool and the entire town still has that older historical centre which is a rare find in these regions.

This little 12th century fortified toll bridge is very much a centrepiece of the village, with it's different size arches and little tower. The old village lays on both sides of the river and from all angles, it is very attractive.

Maybe it is the time taken to get here that enhances the experience. In my case it takes 4/5 hours to get here from Castellar. I love the whole town and especially the Pont Vieux .It must have had a fine history on the former salt route to the Northern Italian towns
