Wonderfully scenic; Very little service

We did the longer 24-km run down the Rouge River in single kayaks. The scenery is lovely all the way through: wooded riverbanks; sand cliffs towering above us; deserted sand bars and beaches all the way along to take breaks, swim and enjoy the sun; the hills along the way and mountains in the distance… Some reviewers seemed unhappy about the presence of the road and houses along the way. I was expecting the worst but the road is noticeable only a handful of times during the day and, yes, there are cottages dotted along the route but the riverbank is superbly preserved with not a single clear-cut property to spoil the charm. The only downside is the rental company itself. The equipment is basic, but it does the job. The client experience is nonexistent. Except for the friendly woman who greets you as you arrive, there is absolutely no attention to the customer. No map is provided, no instructions on what to do if you need assistance, no pointers on how to navigate the sand bars or the rocks that block the route shortly after you launch… After the initial “have fun” at the counter, the rest of the staff don’t even acknowledge your presence as they drive you to the starting point, throw (literally) the kayaks off the trailer, and let you fend for yourself without as much as a “good day”. The price is low, so go for the great fun you will have along the route and don’t expect much by way of service.

A great day on the river

A few thoughts about our trip: 1) The kayaks are open top. I am not sure if they have any closed top kayaks available. 2) The best thing about this trip is that you can take however long you would like. Many other places give you a set pickup time. Not here. This place transports you upriver and you end your trip at their base location along the river. This allows you to enjoy your trip without having to look at your watch. 3) In August, when we took our trip, the river runs lower and slower. The current ranged from barely noticeable to, on occasion, pleasantly helpful. I only got stuck on a sandbar once, but I was able to use my paddle to free myself without getting out of the kayak. You have to pay attention to where the channel is during this time of the year in order to avoid becoming stuck. 4) As others have said, the river does not feel remote. There is a road alongside most of the river and you can hear road noise. You usually cannot see the road. It's the noise that is the issue. 5) The biggest advantage of this river is all of the sandbars. There are lots and lots of them. They are the perfect place to stop, have a snack, swim, or just take a break. 6) The kayaks and equipment were of decent quality. We had no issues. 7) There were no large rocks in the river. There were a few fallen trees that you had to paddle around, but it was not a problem. We really enjoyed our 12km paddle on the river and would gladly return. As a matter of fact, I've already booked a 24 km paddle.

Me and my friends have been coming to Pause Plein Air for years. Owner is Mark and he's very friendly.

They offer Kayak & Canoe trips down the Rouge river. This is AWESUM. There are plenty of beaches to stop along and enjoy. Water is SUPER clean, you can see the bottom clearly all the time. The river is all sand.

Major advantages over its competitor Kayak Cafe (which I tried) is that you end your trip on the beach next to Pause Plein Air. You don't have any arrival time unlike Kayak Cafe where you need to show up for the shuttle at a specific time.

Reason is that Pause Plein Air gives you a shuttle ride upriver to the start destinations and you end at their facility. Kayak Cafe is the opposite, you start at their facility and end with a shuttle ride at a specific time.

We rented kayaks for the 12km ride down la riviere rouge. (A 30km option is also available). Bring a picnic as you will be able to stop all along the route on any of the sandy beaches you will come across. The 12km route takes approx 3 to 5 hours to do, depending on how many stops you make. Their is signage along the route. Your rental includes a life jacket and transportation to the beginning of the route. There is free parking on site along with washrooms and change rooms.

What a wonderful way to spend a day drifting down the Red River. Took our own lunch and stopped on a sand bank about half way down. Great service and good kit for our use. Easy day. Even had to ask them to take my money as they thought I had already paid!!!

We arrived at 9.a.m. for our reservations, 3 kayaks, and they were ready for us and had us in the water by 9:15. The kayaks were in good shape and they had maps that laid out the route clearly. The route, 12km, was well marked and easy to follow. Plenty of flat, shallow water, with several good sandbars to stop for a rest or snack. The river is not "wilderness" and there is a road that parallels the route most of the way, but it is far enough away from the road and shielded enough to make the trip fun. The river was shallow the day we were there in early August, about 1-3 feet deep, but was broad and fairly fast moving. No rapids, falls, and really not any major obstacles to deal with. Not a wilderness white water trip, but a great family trip for newer kayakers or canoers. The livery is easy to find and overall a very good experience. 4 not 5 stars only because the route along the Rouge River is dotted with an occasional house and the nearby road, otherwise, this is a good family choice. During our 3 hours on the river we saw only about 10 other people on the river, and for most of the time 2-21/2 hours, we were by ourselves.

Very friendly and helpful on phone, answering all of our questions beforehand. We were worried that the river might be too dangerous for kids after recent heavy rain, but we need not have worried at all - there were no rapids or white water on the 12km section we did. It was perfect as a family canoeing experience,

We hired one Canadian canoe for our family of 4 (kids age 6 and 8). Kids had cushions to sit on and we got the seats. Transported up river in minibus and then finished at the base. Staff member made sure we got on water ok.

Sand banks to stop on if you like.

Life jackets provided.

We rented a Canoe and a kayak and it was so much fun. I loved being able stop at the multiple beaches and not being rushed. Next time I will pack a picnic basket. The kids loved being on the river.
The people are nice and they make sure you are comfortable before sending you on your way. It would be fun for couples who want something romantic or large groups who want to fun.
Thanks for the experience!

Our family visited August 4/2016. There were 10 kayak's that made the trip!! The star was very helpful with the booking right through to the end! Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a wonderful day on the river. This is our third consecutive year for this adventure!

Nice weather, nice peaceful river ride.
Negatives: Kayaks were marginal, as were the paddles. Basically as cheap and old as can be but still float. No instruction, and the employee didn't really help anyone get into the kayaks. One couple that had never kayaked...wife got in and the kayak floated away before husband got in. Employee was gone already. Thankfully another kayaker saved the day by wadding out and getting the wife and kayak back to shore.
Overall it was a nice day on the river.
