We went to 2 observation points for Lake Mashu. Observation point 1 is the main area, where there is a souvenir shop, eatery and restrooms. A token entry fee is levied for vehicular entry. Observation point 3 is just by the side of the road, and parking along the road shoulder is free. Of these 2 points, we thought the... More

After a couple of cloudy days in Utoro, it was great to have the sun shining at Lake Mashu. Stopped at the observatory as we already paid for car fees at Mt Io. On a sunny day, views are stunning regardless of which observatory you stop at.

We visited East Hokkaido in May 2017. We drove from Utoro area to Rausu via Shiretoko pass which was open after avalanche. We visited Po river heritage nature park and enjoyed exploring the park by bicycles. (You can also walk but it is quite far.) Then on the way to Kussharo, we visited Lake Mashu. There are several view points... More

Following the trails to walk around the rim of the lake. Different viewpoints provide different experience. Bring your camera. It was pretty foggy the day I went last July. But the fog comes and goes. Just be patient.

It was raining heavily during our visit to Lake Mashu in August. Indeed a regret for not able to view the scenery at Lake Mashu as heavy fog covered up the beauty of the lake. If raining, it is not advisable to go as you need to pay for parking and yet unable to see anything.

We travelled to Lake Mashu as part of a tour group and we were lucky enough to see it with some sunshine, which turns the lake a beautiful blue. Lake Mashu is a lake that is not filled by any source and does not empty by any source and the water clarity is perfect. Very beautiful to see.

This beauty is encircled by crater walls and has no inlets or outlets, giving it a mysterious air. We viewed it overlooking from an observation deck as part of a multi-day bus tour of Hokkaido. Gorgeous even when partially obscured by fog.

We visited the main viewpoint and paid 500yen for parking on a fairly miserable day. Nevertheless there were brief sunny interludes while we were there and it was possible to get a good idea of the beauty of the lake and its very mountainous setting. Very strong winds precluded walking too far but a chipmunk provided entertainment with its antics... More
