Well, you too could make one of those famous photos with monkeys in warm pool. This would work only in winter, when it's really cold. At temperatures above 5 deg.C monkeys don't enter the water. However, they are playing, fighting and flirting all the times...More

It was very funny to watch the monkeys interact and to go into the hot springs. They got very close to you so you could really see what they were like

Maybe there might not be a lot to see here but walking around leisurely is pleasurable. You meet people walking their dogs, some tending to their chores; small shops and bars and craft stores. Everything we experienced here is different from our city life and...More

We visited in November. After being dropped at the private car park by our shuttle bus, we walked for ~4 kilometres to the hot springs where the monkeys were bathing and playing. A walking stick and good boots are desirable here. Just delightful to see...More

What a great place to visit!!! If you would like to stay at a traditional Japanese hotel, this is the place to go. Everyone was extremely friendly. The onsen was beautiful and relaxing. The rooms were very clean. Breakfast was great too!!!!

This is a lovely small town that is easy to get to from Tokyo by train. Many good hotel / ryokan options and lots of good food. Worth trying several onsen and trekking to see the monkeys.

Yudanaka was the very first onsen experience in Japan. The trip was in December so with few guests enjoying the onsen had he whole bath for myself. The ryokan has Japanese styled rooms and we stayed in one such room with traditional tatami mat beds....More

This was an outdoor onsen. The view on a clear night is pleasant. You can also see the lights of the small town. It is private with fence and bushes. There is a small building to place shoes and other belongings. You can change and...More
