Well worth the hike to this observation point to overlook the village and see how it sits in the landscape. Great views. If the hike is too daunting there is a shuttle bus (small fee) from the village. We shuttled up and walked down, which was very enjoyable.

GPS guided us this route but guy at the bottom was turning everyone around. Obviously there is a problem with the signs. Ended up parking at the bottom and spending an hour walking to this place. Still wondering how the other cars got up there.

Beautiful place to see if you are passing by as the journey took us about 2 hrs by car from Gifu station.

Isbsite givesm your an excellent overlook onto this UNESCORTED WORLD HERITAGE SITE folk village. Recommend taking the shuttle bus up and walking down saving energy for the village itself in the valley floor. Easy to imagine two centuries earlier. Good framed-photo view from far right end of the overlook fence, beneath the trees (sakura and momiji).

Since you are already in Shirakawa-go, how can you not visit the observatory! The observatory gives you the bird's eye view of the village. It is also there that you will be able to shoot those post card worthy photos. There is a shuttle bus service that you can take up to the observatory deck. You can also drive up... More

When touring Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, a short stop at this observatory to enjoy its panoramic views of Gassho houses and beautiful landscape.

You could take a bus at the cost of ¥200 per person, per way to the top. A great view of the village from the top. The is a shop and u could also have your photo taken by some professional.

If you visit Shirakawago, it is a must to situate yourself in the Shiroyama Observatory Deck. Where else can you get a glimpse of that iconic and immaculate village with thatched roofs pre-industrialized Japan? It is a UNESCo World Heritage no doubt. Although it seems to be fast becoming known, I hope it remains to its essence as a village... More

The observation deck provided a great view of the village with the traditional houses. It was definitely worth the bus ride up and down the hill.

If you visit Shirakawa-go, the observatory is a must-go place. You can overview the village and take signature photos. You may take shuttle (200 yen) or do some hiking.
