Buses from Bus Stop #4 in front of Minakami Station head in the direction of Takaragawa Onsen roughly once every 2 hours, but only the 10:45 am & 1:35 pm stop there directly, taking 33 minutes; others you have to get off at Takaragawa Iriguchi 宝川入口 then walk 20 minutes / 800 m downhill or get the hotel shuttle. Very... More

This place is so beautiful and authentic, by far my favorite Onsen. I visited in February of 2016 and am going to go back again in November. They pick you up from the Station and take you to the hotel. I loved the experience from start to finish. The food is very traditional, so it may be too traditional for... More

Love this onsen and we learned that Takaragawa Onsen is one of the biggest onsen in Japan. There is a bus that takes you direct to this onsen during the day and the last bus pick from onsen is at 5pm. They have a lot of sections and even one close section for ladies only. Water is naturally hot and... More

I was so exited to spend a lovely day relaxing in the beautiful outdoor onsen, however this was all ruined once I entered and was confronted with the horrible and unsettling sight of four bears in filthy cramped cages. There are some bulls#*t signs bagging on about conservation, but I have eyes & they were filled with tears at the... More

Unlike in many other onsens, here it seemed like people did not quite bother as to how we dress. Some covered certain body parts while walking to the pool and took off all once inside. Some were all-out naked inside and outside (while walking from changing room to a pool and from one pool to the other). A few decided... More

I came here with my parents and was impressed at the beautiful scenery. Our room over looked the river and trees. The sound of the running river was very relaxing. We were really looking forward to a delicious dinner but it was pretty disappointing. The tempura had been sitting a bit too long and overall the flavor a weren't there.... More

This is the nicest onsen I have been too but also the cruelest. The baths are fantastic, the building is authentically old and the food is amazing. But it turns out there are five bears being kept in incredibly small, empty concrete cages next to the onsens. A staff member assured me this was better than being turned into "soup".... More

Make sure to book the shuttle bus, because it's difficult to get here by public transport. Going here is quite a special experience, but be prepared: some people will still take photo's while you're (naked!) in the baths. The staff was very nice, and the room was very clean. The dinner was exciting, with a dozen of small dishes which... More

Takaragawa Onsen is accessible by bus, but we would recommend going by car -- much faster, plus you can stop along the way to take pictures of the excellent scenery. This onsen is one of the most popular and famous river bathing onsens in Japan. The location is beautiful, and bathing outside along a rushing river is an experience few... More

I love this place. Been twice now (once in the dead of winter, once in spring) and have loved it both times. It's quirky and the staff are super friendly. The baths themselves are in a beautiful setting and a special treat is the midnight dip after delicious dinner in the Ryokan!
