One day my Japanese friend, who’s been working in Hinohara Village, showed me around the area deep in the mountains of Tokyo Prefecture. One of the places we went was Kazumanoyu Hot Spring. Without going into the restaurant or the hot spring, we only enjoyed sightseeing the area. Houses in this area had distinctive features of ‘kabuto-zukuri’ (= helmet-like roof) in order to raise silkworms in the attic. They no longer raise silkworms, but many of these traditional houses have been preserved, and some of them have been converted to inns or restaurants.
