Besides being old (1928) and being packed in like sardines, the ticketing system is infuriating. They look at your ticket getting on and collect it once you get off. You can hike up from the bottom, take a bus, or use the rope-way. You can find the entrance to the ropeway by following the crowds. When I arrived at the base of Mt Yoshino, at the exit of the railway station, I was expecting to find a ropeway which was taking me up to the mountain.
