The mausoleum is a few minute walk off the main street of Koya. The mausoleum buildings are beautiful decorated. Access is limited. Worth the walk? Yes. A disaster if you miss it? No.

Two old mausoleum buildings in a small yard that is not well maintained... Takes about 2 minutes to visit while getting charged 200JPY per person. Complete rip off.

We had a little time before the buses would be running, and popped along to see these. There's very little to see though- the wooden carvings are clearly the work of highly skilled carpenters but there is little information and nothing really here beyond looking...More

From a historical standpoint this is one of the most important places in Koya-san. While it may not be spectacular at first glance, if you know the history it really drives it home. Not to mention the walk to get here through Okunoin is a...More

Very ornate and beautiful buildings. This is small site, but the details of the buildings are very intricate and worth seeing.

Big fan of historical Japanese events and fiction. Thought this place was a bit of a ripoff, two mausoleums which are locked but you can walk around. If I wasn't such a fanboy of Iesayu I would have been in-and-out in under 5mins, interesting history...More

Tokugawa's final resting place is diminutive but charming, away from the two main areas of tourist attraction of Koyasan. I stood in front of the mottled "hut" and thought about the turbulent Japan of his days. I suspect that a "normal" foreign tourist would spend...More

Walk via the UNESCO world heritage cemetery for 2 km to get to mausoleum. Just relax and enjoy the peaceful forest. The actual temple is only just a small part of the experience. Sit and watch.

Six of the 15 Tokugawa shoguns are buried at Zōjō-ji. The Taitoku-in Mausoleum ofHidetada (and the monument to his wifeSūgen'in), Ienobu, and Ietsugu had been designated National Treasures of Japan, but were burned in World War II. At present, parts of two of their graves have the distinction of being Important Cultural Properties of Japan....More
