Quaint but mostly deserted. And quite a few closed shops and distressed buildings. There are a few interesting shops selling locally-made candles, shoyu, vinegars and produce and a couple of tea houses. We visited around the end of October and the area was very quiet....More

walk up and down the street that preserves the way Uchiko was a hundred or more years ago. There are many interesting shops with many items to choose as souvenirs.

An easy and peaceful walk with historical buildings preserved. Some are converted into museum and others shops. Surprisingly not touristy at all. Some of the buildings do have proper explanations in both Japanese and English. Worth a visit.

Uchiko generally was a surprising find- so beautifully preserved, the street with awesome small shops and restaurants with awesome atmosphere. Unlike other areas in Japan most had a counter to chat with the owner which was fun. Highly recommended.

Great place to walk around in the old town of Uchiko. You can visit some shops (make sure to visit the candle making shop about half way up the street to see how they make the traditional candles.
