If you have a couple of hours free then this is worth the effort. A short half hour walk up the side of the crown (not overly strenuous) then you can wander along the top exploring as you go. Its an amazing part of the world - this granite outcrop rising out of the farmlands - the view from the top if excellent and worth the hike.

A good solid uphill bushwalk to a great view from the crown.. average fitness required, there are some climbing bolts in place ready to test you out if you know what you are doing.

Evans Crown is a scattering of giant granite boulders hanging off the edge of a hill, long known to Aboriginals. The views from the top of the Tarana countryside are pretty awesome & it’s easy to see why they held ceremonies here. If your game, it’s an interesting place to spend a day poking around, exploring the massive boulders, finding paths thru & around them to access vantage points, making it a pretty good place to hide from the cops.
The entry gate has an information board but has no other signage in the reserve as directed by the Waradjuri Aboriginal people who for centuries have considered Evans Crown as a spiritual place, giving it a mysterious vibe. It is in a completely natural state, little has changed since European exploration, only discovered by white man in 1813 only months after Blaxland, Lawson & Wentworth found a trail thru the Blue Mountains to open up the heart of NSW for exploration, farming & settlement. We spotted plenty of wildlife kangaroos, wallabies, lizards, kookaburras & a hawk. Finding a private spot in the shade with a view & a blue sky is pretty much the perfect day.
Evans Crown is located in the Evans Crown Nature Reserve managed by the NSW Parks & Wildlife Service, off Sodwells road. The Tarana Hotel, a typical small town pub is located 5mins away on Honeysuckle road. A visit to Evans Crown could easily be complimented by a scenic day trip to Jenolan Caves 1 hour/60kms away via Oberon or to break up a trip if travelling between Lithgow & Bathurst. A straight drive from Sydney would be under 3 hours.

They have just finished doing major work on the track to the top of Evans Crown. Still working on the car park but plenty of space to park. The walk to the top is reasonably steep and has lots of steps but a normal fitness person can make it in 20/25 minutes. Once at the top turn left and explore the area. We spent about 40 minutes exploring the area before heading back down. Overall took about 1 1/2 hours which is what the sign says. Once at the top the "formed track" stops but there are well worn paths and a person of normal agility should not have any problems. The views from the top are spectacular and worth the effort. Better during cooler weather rather than on a hot day.

We saw this walk in the information brochures. The walk up was clearly marked but once up the top it was not. We eventually found the east view and that was wonderful. No one else was around so we had the view to ourselves. However finding our way back to the path was not easy and we had a few goes back and forth trying to retrace our steps back to the steps down. We did find them but it was lot easy. Keep trace of your way up to the boulders ! Also it would be very slippery if wet.

Just outside Tarana, this reserve provides a fairly easy walk up to the crown. From the top you can see a long way out to the east and the west. Beautiful views over the mountains and west to the Fish River.
The first section has recently had new steps put in place but you will need to scramble a bit over the granite boulders to get right to the top. Well worth it!

Easy trail to follow, plenty of steps, lovely view at about half way. We were fortunate to have a beautiful morning with very little wind and a very clear day. Absolutely not a difficult walk.

Don’t let the steep walk to the top put you off. It’s not that hard and once at the top the views and the boulder formations are absolutely stunning. The whole area has quite a mystical feel to it.

We walked to Evans Crown last weekend on a perfect autumn day. This walk starts a couple of kms outside the town of Tarana, about 45 minutes from Lithgow on the Sodwalls Road. The drive out there is beautiful, following the railway line and crossing several bridges, in a hilly landscape with poplars everywhere, and small villages. The walk to the Crown is uphill, but not strenuous, on a formed track which was improved about two years ago. It takes about 30 minutes to the end of this track, and then you work your way up to all these huge granite boulders by following various rough tracks, on the "all roads lead to Rome" principle. This final bit takes about 20 minutes. You can then perch on any one of those massive rocks, and survey the countryside in all directions. It is beautiful. After the walk, head to the Tarana Hotel for lunch or a drink. Nice outdoor area, the little railway station, food is reasonable, friendly service. Do it.

A beautiful place. Yes it has lots of steps; but they are well marked and you can always stop and rest- right?
There are stunning views of the countryside in all directions once you reach the top and the huge boulders and nocks and crannies to explore are fantastic.
Walking shoes and water are a must, especially in Summer.
We found an echidna they day we visited which was a very welcome added bonus
After the walk you can always enjoy a visor to the nearby Tarana Pub
