The oldest continuously-operated monastery in Europe, I'm told, and completely worth a visit. Make sure to visit the catacombs underneath, and the excavations outside the rear of the church.

The oldest monastery in Europe is worth the detour. Having celebrated its 1500th anniversary in 2015, they have created an excellent tour with audio guide in many languages. You will visit the catacombs with the earliest tombs, the shrine of Saint Maurice, an African soldier...More

The Abbaye is just a short walk from the town centre of St. Maurice. Advisable to check opening times as I think that there are no visits during services in the Abbaye. You can visit the church and see the short explanatory film without paying....More

Great way to spend a rainy day. Reception staff very friendly. Free audio tour (English) when you hand in a form of id. Surprisingly fun- beautifully atmospheric (especially when we got to experience real life gregorian chants). The treasures were spectacular. Highly recommend! It certainly...More

Thank you for reminding us that a visit in a museum can be "Really fun"! Filtered through the bright patina of centuries, the Treasury has benefited since the 2015 Jubilee from insights afforded by modern museography. A lot of specialists in this interdisciplinary field (art,...More

We were staying with our daughter and family in Gryon. She suggested we came here. Allow at least two hours for your visit and you may be so enthralled that you spend much longer. TIPS: pay for the audio guide; take a passport or other...More

We are glad to read that your visit was time well spend! The history of the Abbey is definitively very long and rich. So there is a lot to see and to learn... Did you know that with 49 bells, the chime the basilica of...More

It's not often you stumble across a sleepy little town tucked under mountain cliffs and hidden by an outcrop to discover such richness of history and wealth! The Abbey is still in use (as it has been for over 1500 years!) and my nervous guide...More

Very often the most unexpected treasure is hidden in a very simple jewel box! We are delighted that you have enjoyed your trip in time. 90 minutes might seem a little bit too long, but the History of the Abbey is so long and so...More

Tip : if you just want to visit the beautiful church it is free. But entrance with audioguide (a min. 90 minutes tour) into the museum and archeological site is charged CHF 14, well worth paying though (Swiss Museum Pass valid). This is for sure...More

Impressive monastery that has been in continuous service for over 15 centuries. The highlight is the treasury as the grounds are less impressive than I expected. Public parking is limited but your entry ticket includes a recorded guide in various languages.More

The Treasury of Saint-Maurice includes many masterpieces that reflect the magnificence of gifts made to the Abbey and the extent of its spiritual and artistic influence. A conservation workshop, sited neat the treasure room, restores brilliance and solidity to the precious objects. For many visitors,...More
