This is the fort that was used as a concentration camp during the Nazi occupation of Belgium (1940-44). The camp gained a reputation as a place of great cruelty, and whilst it was not an extermination camp, killings were carried out there. The original gallows and firing squad posts are still at the camp. You can tour the site with... More

This is a must for both educational and cultural value. Every person should go visit to learn from past mistakes that should never ever be repeated in history. Man cannot rule or dominate over another man, not meant to be. Our tour guide, Bob, was both knowledgeable and passionate about the history of this place. Most of the camp/fort has... More

As everyone can read, this place was not so much a concentration camp as it was a prisoner of war camp. The horrors that the prisoners received were beyond belief, no matter the reason for them being there. If you are an English speaker, make sure you take the guided tour recordings. The only downside is that the majority of... More

It was a very intense experience. The fort is well mantained as it was in the 2nd world war, including some symbols. The audio guides are available in many languages including English, French, Dutch and Spanish, and the visit is very well organized. If you go together with a big group the staff will make you the visit. If I... More

It was thanks to all the TripAdvisor reviews that we went to this little-publicised museum, and it is as moving, as worthwhile and as clearly presented as all previous reviews suggest. A visit we will never forget. The 460 bus from Brussels costs 6 euros return and stops right outside the museum. The stop at the Gare du Nord is... More

This place shows the horror of the Holocaust in Belgium. The atmosphere takes you back to the dark years of Naziregime in Belgium.

This place is well-preserved, with very thorough explanations, commentary and captions in Dutch, French, German and English. Take your time to follow the guide and pay your respects to those who did not share our privilege of birth today. The execution arena in the field behind the fort still has bullet holes and ropes. Our history is ugly, and sobering.... More

This camp was one of the last on our two-week tour of Europe and we're so glad we made time to visit. It is dark, and scary, and the walls practically ooze sadness and despair...but we felt it was important for our five teenage children to see firsthand what the world allowed to happen by its inaction. People were starved,... More

For the dark place that it once was, Fort Breendonk is quite the historical place. Well organized and easy to walk around. The reenactments are on point and the information is very complete. We spent a good 4 hours in there, and while it may get a bit emotionally draining, it really is a can't miss experience.
