Take a trek to the peak or from the peak to down. Useless 50 years old land rovers (association/union) come to ur rescue or rather headaches. But the views take away ur bad experience.

We arrived Tonglu (Darjeeling district, WB) on 30th March, 2015 around 3 pm. Tonglu (3036 meter) is within Singalila National Park of Darjeeling subdivision of West Bengal, India, near the India - Nepal border. The route is as follows: New Jalpaiguri - Manebhanjan by car (3-4 hrs). From Manebhanjan either trek to Tonglu (3-4 hrs) or hire old LANDROVER from Association office at Manebhanjan. Landrover may take 2.5 hrs. Road is not good obviously. Only 4x4 (4 wheel drive) car can hike here. Trekking is preferable. Trekkers favourite trek route: Manebhanjan - Meghma - Tonglu - Tumling - Gouribas - Kalipokhri - Sandakphu.

Trekkers may halt here overnight to explore the beauty of Kanchanjungha and Everest family in a clear weather. Porter / guide available at Manebhanjan.
One hill garden of large variety medicinal plants are here. I must say if any one wants to visit some unknown or little known hill village with adventurous as well as nature lovers mentality, he/she must visit here.

Only 3 settlements are there for overnight stay. GTA's Trekkers Hut, DI Bunglow and a small two storied private accommodation. Except DI bungalow, Trekkers Hut and Pvt. home stay provide dormitories. DI bungalow can be booked from DM office, Darjeeling. If room is available, then visitors can request owner of home stay for DI bungalow. Only 3 d/b rooms are there, cost ₹ 1200/- per room. DI rooms, no doubt very good.

This is very small hill village, do not expect much facilities. Solar light available in the home stay only in the evening. Visitors should carry all emergency medicine, sufficient winter clothes. Best time to visit: October-December, March-April.

We went for the Sandakphu Trekking in Mid-December. We preferred Tonglu over Tumling as our first night halt. And we found it was a good decision. We stayed at the Tonglu Trekkers Hut which is situated at Tonglu Hill Top and it is the only accommodation available at Tonglu. The altitude of the place is above 11000 ft. So it was very cold during mid-December. In the morning we found everything has turned silver. The mighty Kanchenjungha range was completely visible. The changing colors of the peaks during sunrise was awesome.

This place is heavenly. This was my first trek and probably one of the most memorable moments of my life too. The view of Mount Kanchendzunga is totally clear and at a perfect angle from this place, where you can see "Sleeping Buddha" from everywhere you go.

Tonglu is a small village situated at a mountaintop which is mainly used by trekker(en route to Sandakfu) as place for spending night. We started trekking from Dhotrey and it took us approximately 4.5 hours to reach Tonglu. The homestays are quite clean and the hosts are very welcoming as well as helpful. We went there in the month of January, so we expected a clear view of Kanchendzunga next morning.Luckily, Tonglu did not disappoint us. I, personally witnessed the most beautiful sunrise of life with a clear view of Kanchendzunga, while it changes it's color with the rising sun.

After breakfast, we went for a short trek to a nearby monastry situated in the lower part of tonglu and spent some time there.

The weather was very chilling (in morning, it was near to 5-6 degree), and at night it was near to minus degree. There is a lot of wind which will make you even colder than it actually is. But, you will forget everything each time you look at the gigantic Sleeping Buddha lying in front of you. :)

Adding some pictures clicked by me there. If you are planning to go there, do not hesitate, just go!! You will not be disappointed. Enjoy!!

People keep talking about Tonglu and Tumling (also spelt Tumbling) for their wonderful views of the Kangchenjunga. Nevertheless, last month when I was in Tonglu, returning to Maney Bhanjyang from Sandakphu, the weather was cloudy and misty and I couldn't get a glimpse of the snowy peaks (I've seen them from Sandakphu nevertheless).

However, what amazed me and my wife were the amazing highlands where the sun was playing hide and seek with the seek, and horses grazing underneath. Both of us being English literature people, we were immediately reminded of the heaths in Thomas Hardy's novels. The view of Tumling from the Tonglu hill is beautiful, though I would say Tumling is a little more pretty place (the two places lie a couple of kilometers apart).

I don't want to spoil your amazement by saying too much; you should visit the place yourself. If you want to get a glimpse of the Scottish highlands in West Bengal, this is the place!
