Bing'an Ancient Town, nestled in Guizhou, is a hidden gem exuding a timeless charm. This well-preserved town, perched along a scenic river, offers a journey back in time. Walking through its narrow, cobblestone streets, I was captivated by the ancient wooden architecture and the gentle flow of the river below. The town's serene ambiance is complemented by the warm smiles of local residents, who maintain their traditional way of life. Every corner tells a story, from the old bridges to the quaint teahouses. Bing'an is not just a place, but a living museum, showcasing the rich history and culture of Guizhou.

A short bus ride from Chishui (hop on a minibus at KeYun Zhan bus station, on RenMinXi Lu) the village of Bing An is nestled in a valley bottom and offers stunning scenery. Take the pedestrian bridge (Y20 pp) across the river to stroll through the midst of the ancient stilt housing. Be prepared for a lot of staring though, as not many foreigners visit this area! The central alleyway winds along the steep cliff side and with tall bamboo woven walls on either side, and hung with red lanterns, it looks like a Chinese fairy tale!

The Red Army marched through here and there's a museum dedicated to them with pictures of various communist officials, including a very young looking Mao. There are a few old lanterns to look at but no English so it was hard to gain much info from the museum.

You can cross the river, back to the road at the far end of the village on another bridge. Allow about an hour for the circular walk around the village. Wait on the main road and jump on one of the waiting minibuses for a ride back to Chishui.
