Walking through the tunnels, you couldn't help but feel the tension that soldiers on patrol here must have felt during the times of crisis with the mainland. Be sure to go to the fortified observation bunker to watch maritime traffic sail by.

For a long time, this was as close as you were likely to get to Red China. Througth powerful binoculars, you could see people goingf about their daily business on the other side of the Taiwan Strait, only a kilometer or two away. I got a kick from seeing this sight, even though I've been to mainland China ten or... More

MaShan is at the closest point to mainland China. Through the large –sized binoculars, we can see the scenes across the sea if weather permit. It used to have powerful loud speakers for propaganda purpose. It would broadcast, “Mainlanders are (under) Deep Water and (facing) Hot Fire” or “Three Principles of People unify China”. Nevertheless, no more.

It was one of those deserted military facilities which used to be an observation point monitoring activities along the coast line of Xiamen, China. A small quiet place for an non obstructive view of Xiamen from kinsman island.

For those who have seen pagodas in China/Taiwan, this one is a bit of a laugh as it's nothing special to look at. However, the views are great and there is almost no one there (at least in January), so it's a nice to place to seek peace and quiet.

Mashan observatory has tunnel to the underground observatory of the soldiers during the wartime. It is a good experience to actually go inside the tunnel to the observation area where you can view the China territory at the other side to the sea. If you are travelling alone, the entrance is hidden and you will not know that there is... More
