Walked up from the entrance near the hot springs to the caves. Pretty awesome views of the rajgir area, different to the views from gridhakuta. Beautiful Jain temples along the path but everyone's trying to beckon you in (to donate money I assume). The caves are interesting, nothing developed but cool to see inside. Most definitely never housed 500 monks at once :)
The downside, apart from the long sweaty climb up, was that we were the ONLY tourists. And I was one of only 3 or so women I saw on the whole trail.
When we were getting near the caves, two guys dressed as guards started walking with us trying to be our 'guides'. We politely told them we would go ourselves, but they persisted. A couple beggars joined us on the cliff side when looking inside the caves. I felt quite uncomfortable at this point. We knew what was coming as we walked down and thanked them, and tried to leave and they asked for 'baksheesh' (money). We politely refused and they left us without too much fuss. But altogether a more uncomfortable experience than we would like :(

The Saptaparni Cave is situated atop a hill namely Vaibhava Hill and witnessed a very historic event of first Buddhist Council . This council was held here after six months after the 'Mahaparinirvana' of lord Buddha. This council was attended by over 500 monks from all over the world and was led by Buddha's chief disciple namely Maha Kashyapa. A Magadha ruler named Ajatshatru also built a Sabha Mandap in front of these caves, which was used for this assembly.

Situated near rajgir hot springs, this can be visited by taking a tuktuk ride. There are seven caves (sapta) inside this.

Don't miss this place at the top of Vaibhava Hill, where the first Buddhist Council was held after Lord Buddha attained Mahaparinirvâna. A place full of spirituality.

saptaparni cave is good cave because it is very peaceful type of cave and no any traffic is here and you must go to see the cave because it is very good and related to historical only but as a local point of it is also a very good place

It lies on the top of Vaibhab hills. One can see Rajgir from here. Cave are ancient and I visit here very eagerly.

The place had a beautiful location. The view of Rajgir from here was spectacular. There was a hot water spring near the entrance which was the first one I had ever seen. We did not notice many tourists visiting the place , maybe because it's not as popular as it should be.
