- JackieUnited Kingdom102 contributionsBeautiful, full of life, and dog friendly. We've visited a few ethnographic villages on our travels, but this was our favourite by a long way. It is in a beautiful location. Although it is not inhabited, it had the feel of a working village and some life about it, because so many of the shops were full of artisans practising traditional crafts. Besides the sights, there were the sounds and smells, of woodsmoke, and the water wheels powering the grindstones, mills, wood turners and even a meat rotisserie! The crafts were absolutely stunning - working in wood, leather, copper and steel - the cutler was probably my favourite, crafting traditional knives with antler handles. The weirdest was the bagpipes made from a whole goat. The site site is dog friendly, although there were a lot of feral cats about! The entrance fee is very reasonable and I highly recommend a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 8, 2023
- Sands and Sunshine263 contributionsA must-visit-place while in Bulgaria. You can familiarize yourself with the many historical artisan tools and techniques used in Bulgaria and even the Balkans as a whole. There are well made signs with infographics explaining the complex mechanisms of the tools. The whole place carries this "old town" atmosphere through the architecture of the buildings - first floor made out of stone, second out of wood.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten May 22, 2024
- SocccaTolmin, Slovenia1,806 contributionsAmazing open-air museumWe were among the first visitors of that day so the parking was still empty. Just an hour later there were buses and the parking was almost full. The museum was just amazing. There you can see things that were in use decades or a century ago. After the visit we went to the restaurant and we took some interesting meals which we usually don’t eat for breakfast (kachamak, sarma etc.). The waiter was very kind, the meals delicious and the prices quite low.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten June 13, 2024
- Irina MSofia, Bulgaria20 contributionsUnique family experienceETAR is a full open air museum that represents the Bulgarian craftsmanship, lifestyle and village community in the last centuries. It resembles a 18th-19th century traditional Bulgarian village with typical houses. It is newly renovated, full of life and exhibitions, interactive and family friendly. You can try freshly baked traditional Bulgarian bagels and drinks from the traditional bakery and sweets from the confectionery shop. You can try espresso brewed on sand and enjoy the utopic 19 centure view. There are so many crafts to visit and interact with - making bells, leather belts and gloves, icons and pottery, traditional musical instruments and so many more. There are functioning water threadmill, water laundry and different old-school equipment. You can easily spend full day with your kids enjoying the "village"..Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten September 24, 2024

DO NOT VISIT!
Three of us visited the open museum and we all felt it was a complete waste of time. We only wanted to go to the restaurant in the village as it was the only place serving food that was open and the girl at the kiosk told us they take last orders at 4pm. We had to pay the full admission fee despite the fact we told her we weren't interested in the open museum and just wanted to grab some food in the restaurant. Went to the restaurant at 3.25pm and were told they are closed so we couldn't eat there. Asked the girl for a refund and she said they don't do refunds?! We had paid admission fee only to walk to the restaurant amd be told to go somewhere else.
The rest of the museum is not worth it either, it was very small and there was no demonstrations. Extremely disappointing experience, would never visit again.

We visited here today. The very rude woman in the kiosk would not let us go in unless we paid full price. We are pensioners, have residency & could speak Bulgarian but because we weren't Bulgarian she refused us entry. Illegal and discriminatory!!! Not impressed one bit

If you want to get an idea of traditional buildings in Bulgaria, this is the place! Not easy to find though with very light signage, paid parking in season, eco-museum entry price 10 BGN per adult. It is very well done and the tour route is interesting, this eco-museum presents you in a splendid place near a river with old traditional habitats and in each house rebuilt to the original of the artisans and trades of yesteryear (more than 50 visits, exhibitions, attractions) you can even buy some products to eat (baker, pastry chef, confectionery) and from others, their crafts. Superb colorful houses and some craftsmen it is true at work in front of you (but rare overall).

We visited here as part of an organised tour. It's an open air museum with lots of different buildings from across Bulgaria. Some of these also house artisan workers who will show you how they make traditional crafts such as bells and traditional dress / costumes. The signs are in English, but the artisan workers didn't always speak English, so it was helpful that we had our own guide who could translate for us.
We also had lunch at the restaurant, which was good value.

ETARA-The location is nice, situated on 2km from Gabrovo. It is meant to be an ethnographic resort and museum. Around the so called authentic part full of old craft stuff, there are a lot of restaurants. We visited Mehana Etar, quite disappointing place with food and survice. The soup was without any taste of chicken as it was supposed to be a chicken soup. The tables were covered with dirty table clothes. The service was not that bad, but I cannot say it was amazing.
The ethnographic resort was the biggest disappointment of the day. I imagined it so much differently. I thought It would be like an ancient functional village, but it was not. As the restaurant the museums were quite dirty. Of course it was authentic like it was before 100 years, but there were not that much explanation (in Bulgarian and in English). Although there was a really beautiful church, authentic schools, and delicious bakery and pastry. I think it's most suitable for tourists and little kids, who wants to learn more about bulgarian traditions.
Wouldn't visit again!

In this cultural complex, you get to see traditional houses, try out traditional food/snacks, handmade tools, and see people dressed in traditional clothing. The complex is rather large - good enough for you to spend a couple of hours there. If you're on a tour with a car, it's not difficult to get there. It's on the way to many other bigger cities/tourist attractions. Overall speaking, this complex is suitable for adults or families to see.

How much time is needed to visit this?
Written September 19, 2016
It depends on whether you stop and read the information on the buildings and talk to the people there. However an hour or two at Etara should be enough. It's out of Gabrovo. I got a lift there and back.
