If you check out top things to do in Guilin, this is a top three. There are many tours to select, but I recommend you get a driver and do it yourself. A guide is not necessary as you will want to go and walk at your leisure. We had two small children and a tour group would not be okay. You want to go and explore on your own, but I must recommend a fan and a wet towel if possible because the cable-car ride is extremely hot in the June sun and quite unbearable. After that, enjoy the scenery and if that is your goal, then you won’t be saddened as the views are spectacular. If it is raining and or cloudy, wait to go on a clearer day.

We hiked up the rice fields about 1 week before they will harvest. The hike is moderate intensity but worth the effort for the views and pictures.

The place is just amazing. Eventhoug is a little bit difficult to get there, but on the way the people themselves will guide you, do not worry. We took a bus from Guilin, the bus to Longji was around 33 RMB one way from bus station, there are buses going there like every 40 minutes. It takes 2:30 hours approximately to arrive to Longji, the bus let us in the middle of the highway, but some other people (chinese) stopped also in the same point, there is a woman who was kind of in charge of the route, so she told us to wait for another bus to go to the rice terraces, everybody in the bus was going to the terraces so it is their routine to guide you, another bus arrived, we all including the woman got into the bus, and had to pay 50 RMB more, you bettet keep this bus ticket since it is round ticket, from this point to the terraces is around 1 hour more or maybe a little bit less, you will see the entrance to the terrace since there are some announcement, in the bus they will be selling the entrance tickets 80 RMB (50% discount for students).
When we arrived we decided to climb up instead of taking the cable car, what a perfect option to enjoy the terraces, must of the people take the cable car, so the way was no crowded even it was vacation period, and the cable car isn't as close to the rice as you are when walking.
When comming back, be aware of the people selling tickets to go back to Guilin, they will be trying to sell the bus ticket, but remember at this point you already have the round ticket, so dont need to pay again to get back at the transfer point, we took the bus back In the parking lot, not in the exit of the park, there are not buses there, just try to ask where to take the bus back when you arrive to the park, we almost pay 100 RMB because we hadn't found the bus back, and there are many people selling bus tickets to Guilin.
Going back will be the same, you take the bus showing the round ticket, and then they will let you in the middle of the highway again, but another woman will wait for also with the passengers to take the final bus, you will need to pay this one also, 30 or 35 RMB.
Total round trip Guilin-Longji-terraces 110 RMB

On arrival by bus at Dazhai, we booked the cable car ride both ways. Senior pays 90 yuan both ways while a normal ticket is 100 yuan both ways. The cable car station is next to the bus station. We saw many people hiking up to the cable car station. If the weather is good, I would suggest taking the cable car one way and hike the other way. From the cable car station, we could also walk to Tian Tou Zhai which is a large village at midpoint while Dazhai is a village at the base. We ate lunch of bamboo chicken and bamboo rice at the restaurant up there. There are also some locals offering meals at their place. One must defintely hike here to enjoy the rice terraces. However I noticed that it is more pleasant to walk after 4 pm as the mid day heat can be quite hot. So stay at Dazhai or Tian Tou Zhai if possible to enjoy the experience of this rice terraces.

The village has a maza of steps left and right so it's easy to get lost there. Don't go out at night by yourself if you don't know the way. During day time breath taking views. Make sure to do the hike to both view points!

We’ve had some amazing experiences in China from Yunan to Beijing and this is squarely at the top. Just unbelievable views of a special landscape. All of our kids were in awe. Staying in the Ping’an Village was a game-changer in being able to get out early to hike the patties before all the tourists come in on shuttle buses.

Longji mountain is quite far located atleast 2 hrs from either Guilin or Yangshou so ideally should use a complete day to visit here. Journey can be broken midway to visit Huangluo ethnic village which is again an interesting place to visit. This village is known as Chinese village of Rapunzels due to long hairs of women here. We preferred to go up the mountain by cable car and come down trekking. Top of longji mountain is worth visit and view from top makes up for the time, provides amazing view of Longsheng rice fields. The village on top has interesting eateries and few small motels. Since we went their first time would suggest a night stay at one of these motels which looked good and awesome view.

A beautiful view! We went in spring outside when they plant rice, so the terraces are just hundreds of pools of reflecting water. The hike is wonderful (especially if you start at the spot about 2 hours slow walking from the Seven Stars and the Moon lookout). It is challenging and a lot of stairs.

Longji Rice Terraces are quite a long drive from Yangshuo or Guilin, about 2 hours each way which makes for a long day but it is worth it. You can also break the journey a little by visiting the Long Hair tribe in Huangluo Yao Village on the way there. When you get to the terraces - there are two scenic spots in particular - the Moon and the 7 stars and the 9 dragons and 5 tigers. There is a choice of trails and we did a circular route so we could see both but if you do not have the time, mobility or energy, you can do shorter routes. It helps to have proper footwear for walking, as the paths are simply trails in places and can be extremely muddy and slippery. In other parts, there are proper steps. There are villages en route to get refreshments and of course shops to buy the usual handicrafts, goods and souvenirs. In hot weather - do take some water with you and a hat.

The view from the top is mind blowing. The walk upstairs can be demanding, but there are some lifts too. The terraces look absolutely beautifull. This is a must see when you are nearby.
