Fortress of Bard complex is the protagonist of a wide project aimed at the creation of a cultural pole in the Western Alps of Italy. From impregnable defence for the valley the Fortress has been transformed into a gateway to the Alps’ culture and traditions, with a museum centre in the forefront of the international scenery dedicated to the mountain. Nowadays the Fortress offers only a part of the several activities planned by the project, whose purpose is to bring together innovative cultural spaces, services and accommodation in one single structure. To complete the project, in addition to the Museum of the Alps, The Children’s Alps, and the space for temporary exhibitions, Fortress of Bard will host two other museums (Frontiers Museum; Fortress Museum), an info-point to promote the cultural artistic heritage of Valle d’Aosta Region (already working); a school area provided with a lecture room for lessons, meetings and film projections; two conference rooms; a media centre; historical and thematic paths; a small refined hotel, a restaurant and a café (already working).

Visiting this fort is taking part in a piece of history. There I could easily imagine Napoleon´s troops trying to conquer the place...and their frustation. The view to Vale d'Aosta is great too

This might of been the highlight of our 3-day visit to Aosta and the valley....well at least top two with the Gondola up to Mt Blanc # 1. This fort is simply stunning and its history is very compelling. You can almost visualize the cannons and guns being shot down from this place as invaders tried to pass around it... More

We managed to get there 2 hours before closing . Parked in a free lot (p2) and walked up through the path to the municipality building and hotel which were the beginning of fort bard . Once past the municipal building there is a funicular lift to the left. To Get to the main ticket area you have to take... More

The Forte di Bard is a 1800's fortress, you take four different elevators to get there! There's no fee to get up and visit the Fort, there's a fee to visit some different exhibitions that go there. There's not much to see in the fort itself, but the views are beautiful. Right now until January 2017 there's a exhibit about... More

If you're driving up from Milan/Turin motorway, take the exit at Pont Saint Martin, there are a couple of free parking places before you arrive at the Fort, or park directly at the fort 3 floor parking at around 3 to 4 Euros all day parking(that's good) you can walk around or use the lifts free, when you arrive at... From the outside, every thing looks great. And then you need to find your way to the parking lot, and the the way to the fort itself, and then the lifts... You go through several rooms and then, out of nowhere, JESUS!!! And then what I only think was a modern theatre. The view was great, everything else in this... More

A piece of Italian French and world history. Great exhibitions. I recommend to skip the elevators and climb the little path to the castle.

This is an easy day trip into the mountains north of Turin. The fort sits high above the valley with panoramic views. the permanent "history of the alps" museum was a bit of a mixed bag, but two significant temporary exhibits were both great. The first was an extensive collection of the best wildlife photography of the year. The second... More
