The valley lake of the Altai Mountains. Fishing here is excellent. A cold rainy day on our visit. Heavenly natural scenery.

Our wonderful trip to Kanas Lake Geopark began when we booked a 4D/3N package from CYTS in Urumqi. It was a long 12 hour coach ride first to Bu'erqing for an overnight stay. The next morning, we had another 4 hours of travel to get to Kanas Lake Geopark. The scenery along the way was spectacular - in fact, we were rather surprised to see snow-capped mountains. Another trip highlight was an optional tour to Hemu village, about 2 hour's drive from Kanas Lake. Ok...enough said. Let the pictures taken at these scenic places speak for themselves !

Adventuring into Kanas Xinjiang was a once in a lifetime experience... I could never believe that this was actually in China. The colors of the lakes, the mountains and the sheer pure beauty of nature is right at your doorsteps.. I was told that Xinjiang is three times the size of France so there is a lot of places to visit while you are there.. Kanas boasts as one of the most beautiful places in Xinjiang and they were absolutely right. I visited in Aug/Sept 2017 and the temperature is cold in the morning and it will get really warm around 1pm to 3 pm. The temperature will cool down towards the evening and the sun sets at 9:30pm while I was there. It's a land of untouched beauty and I applaud the Chinese government for keeping this place full of clean fresh air and minimize pollution. Be there and be awed!!

The lake and mountains were beautiful. We went in the summer, with wildflowers blooming all over the hills.

Unfortunately, everyone has realized how beautiful it is. The place was mobbed with tourists. To control the flow of tourists, the government has recently implemented a system of buses that, coupled with the Disney-fication that is familiar in Xinjiang, create a theme-park atmosphere. You park down in an imitation Swiss village, then take a packed bus to the ticket office, then board another bus to the actual lake, where you can walk around on boardwalks with thousands of other visitors.

If you walk far enough, it's possible to leave most of the people behind. But the boardwalk is blocked off after only 2km or so, and since you're not allowed to walk freely off the boardwalk, it's rather disappointing.

This is perhaps one of the most beautiful places on earth. The view was simply stunning. The air is clean and fresh and the turquoise water in the river and lakes in Kanas were breathtaking. The lustrous green backdrop forest with the abundance of pine trees gave me a sense of peace and tranquility. You will see a lot of nomads living in yurts during the bus journey. For scenery lovers like myself, this is not a place to be missed. I am already planning to visit again next year.

Kanas Lake is a beautiful lake within the Kanas Nature Reserve in the Altay region of XiJiang and almost at the northern border with Russia. We started from the closest city, Buerjin, which is about 4hrs drive away. The scenery gets progressively more beautiful as we approach the reserve. There are huge grasslands and rugged mountains as we wind our way up. We stayed overnight at the Four Seasons Amusement Hotel, which is just outside the entrance to the reserve. Although the hotel is nowhere as luxurious as it's namesake, it's proximity to the park means you don't have to travel much if you spend more than a day at the reserve.

Vehicle movement within the reserve is centrally controlled, with a fleet of small buses ferrying tourists into the reserve. You can hop onto any bus and drop off at various locations of interest and catch another bus from there. Besides Kanas Lake itself, it is well worth it to stop along the route to view scenic parts of the river, including Crouching Dragon Bay, Moon Bay and Yaze Bay. Avid photographers will love these locations. A morning visit would be easier for photography when the sun is on the photographer's back.

The lake itself is beautiful but not particularly spectacular from the ground. There are various activities you can participate in like a ferry cruise around the lake or a white-water rafting trip down the river, at additional cost. For those more interested in culture, there is also a guide tour to a Tuwa village. Perhaps 1-2 hrs is sufficient for this route, depending how much time you enjoy looking at the scenery.

The other main attraction I visited was the Fish Pavillion, which gives you a bird's eye view of the reserve and should not to be missed. I have reviewed this location separately under “Guanyu Pavillion”. Note that the bus route is different from the route above. Overall a day spent at this reserve was a wonderful experience and highly recommended. I do not believe there are any food kiosks inside the reserve, so make you own arrangements if you want to spend a full day inside.

Not easy to reach there. It's in the very north-west corner of China. But worth the effort.

I took a nice video of this place with my drone and this can help you appreciate the beauty! I uploaded my video and you can find it with a simple Search (my name + Xinjiang)

We took an overnight train from Urumqi to Beitun and then hopped on a bus for CNY 100 to the park- which is Jadengyu gate. This took near 7 hours. The bus station in Beitun is the building on your right as you come out of the train station. Once in Jadengyu buy your tickets for the park CNY 230 which I believe is valid for 2 days but I think if you don't leave the park you can stay longer. From the gate you can get a free shuttle to the lake or for us Taiga International Hostel 17799062031 which was the only place we found taking foreigners. It cost CNY 120 per bed in a dorm of 8. You pay an additional CNY 20 for a bus to Guānyú Pavilion- definitely do this. When we left the park there was a bus for CNY 40 leaving at 10:00 and 16:00 going to Buerjin. Talk to other passengers as we formed a group of 8 and paid CNY 320 thus 40 each to take us to the train station at Beitun. Overall it was just too expensive and took too long in transport to be able to recommend visiting this site.

Kanas Lake is located in a valley in the Altai Mountains, near the very northern tip of Xinjiang, and the province's borders with Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Russia. The lake was formed around 200,000 years ago during the Quaternary period as a result of glacier movement.

The lake contains a crescent moon shaped bay, a lying dragon shaped bay, and a fairy bay that always embraced by mist.

After you visited the Kanas lake, you can visit three other lakes which linked to each other

The Shun XIn(means fairy) lake ,the half moon lake and the 臥龍lake(the hidden dragon or dinasour) when you take an birds eye view

Looking at ground level,is not as spectacular as one stand on top of the mountain looking downwards

There are shuttle buses which linked between the lakes,or you can walk on the wooden platforms along the road

The views on top is better

Though the clear water, the fresh air,is astounding, it is not as spectacular as the Canadian Rockies e.g. LAke Louise

Getting into the park takes a steep multiple turns of up and downhill turns ,can easily get motion sickness

However for those who love nature, it is a good place to visit
