Heaps of bikers, almost no hikers in May

I thought I'd share my experience doing Heaphy as a solo tramper in late May 2016, since I couldn't find any detailed info on this time of year when I was planning it. I had... read more

I thought I'd share my experience doing Heaphy as a solo tramper in late May 2016, since I couldn't find any detailed info on this time of year when I was planning it. I had read online that Heaphy opened to mountain bikes on May 1, and that trampers and bikers "share the track" during the winter. I also noticed... More

We did this walk with our two children aged 15 and 11. This was a wonderful family time. The scenery and facilities were fantastic.

The Heaphy Track near the top of New Zealand's South Island is a fabulous tramp. Whether you're experienced, or not so, it's doable for you. Whether you take two days or five, you'll love it. While most do this walk from east to west, it's also fantastic from west to east. There are three newish huts in which to stay... More

First off, this is an awesome walk! The huts are amazing, we were pleasantly surprised to find flushing toilets in some. We have never really in huts like these before! The track is in exemplary condition and pretty much every creek, stream and river has a bridge or boardwalk over it. We did this over 5 days. Wonderful views. All... More

I would rate the Heaphy along with the Milford and Routeburn as one of the best walks in New Zealand. The four days are all very different, beech forest, open tussock country, descent through rainforent, and final a walk south in nikau palms along the coast.

Wonderful scenery, so different each day! The DOC huts are all very well equipped and comfortable and the track was well maintained. An awesome experience that I would recommend to anyone of moderate fitness.

This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy some fantastic New Zealand scenery with an ever changing landscape as you progress along and gives you opportunity to get away and really enjoy what this country has to offer - beaches, mountains, rivers, tussock land, wide open spaces, bird life and fantastic scenery. If you are reasonably fit and don't mind carrying... More

the views are great near the huts. you may easily do it in 4 nights - it's the most comfortable way. track is well-formed. most huts are new and very comfy. the best day is from the Heaphy Hut to Kohaihai - great views of the sea and beaches. though tussock and mountains are great on the other days. beware... We did the Heaphy in 3 nights and 4 days. The track is easy to do if you are zsed to walk more than 15km per day. The most impressive thing was the changing landscape. after each hut you enter a whole new world. The huts are in very good conditions and equiped with gas and even som pans. We... More

We (50 year old male and two late teens) walked the Heaphy Track from Brown Hut to Kohaihai in mid-January. Caught the Heaphy Bus (Trek Express is same company even though they have separate website) from Nelson with about 16 others. Bus ride was a bit uncomfortable and tedious - took 3.5 hours - but got us there to start... More
