We looked forward to this trip in the Rio Lagratos waterway, The town is small and typically Mexican- little suggestion this is tourist town. Sadly recent rain meant that there were fewer birds than usual with other wildlife also having vanished. The result was a disappointing trip but that is nature for you!

I highly recommend visiting Rio Lagartos and spending time with Diego. I spent 2 full days birding with him. He knew the exact areas for certain birds, was extremely knowledgeable about the birds and area, and helped add over 80 birds to my life list. I recommend him for beginners to advanced birders, there is no substitute for local knowledge.... More

We enjoyed our experience with Diego on a morning birding tour. He helped us find the local specialties and lots more! In the afternoon we took a boat tour with Paco. Amazingly, he eased the boat into an impossibly narrow passage where, after some hard work, he found a super cooperative Pygmy Kingfisher. The rest of the boat tour was... More

Diego Nunez knows his birds. We did a two day morning/evening bird tour from the comfort of his truck and I picked up 26 new lifers, including the Olive throated Parakeet, cinnamon Hummingbird, Yucatan Bobwhite, Dusky-capped flycatcher, and an albino Tiger Heron. Stayed at Diego's place at the Ecotour lodge. Very clean and nice room with plenty of space and... More

No traffic, no people, no air conditioning, no nothing... just a wonderful place to do something different located about 2:30 hours from Mérida, Yucatán. A small fishermen town with no calendar or hour to comply with. Park anywhere and walk to the "malecon" (seaboard). Talk to the guys offering tours to the salt reservoirs and work your bargaining skills until... More

My two children (21 and 22) and myself went to Rio Largartos to see the crocodiles at night, and bird watch in the daytime. We had a great time with our guide of the 2 trips, Francisco. Wonderfully educated young man that has a degree in eco tourism. He knew the names of all the birds, the ages of the... More

A long way by boat, not cheap. We saw numerous herons, pelicans, egrets and 3 crocs, all very close up. The flamigoes, however, were a long way away and not as many as I expected but they were very pink!

We spent a couple of hours touring Rio Largartos and seeing the wildlife and numerous flamingos. The scenery was beautiful and our guide spotted several alligators hiding in the mangroves which was fun to see. We also got out and floated in the salt ponds and also got a Mayan mud bath out of it as well. It was a... More

I have never seen flamingos that were so intensely pink in my life! They looked Photoshopped, but couldn't have been since I was seeing them with my very eyes! It is definitely a bit of a road trip, but we stayed at the Hacienda Chichen in Chichen Itza & made this one of our day trips using our rental car.... More

This boat trip was included in our Mayan 7 day tour, and prior to arriving we were told that during this trip we could see Crocodiles, Pink Flamingos, Herons, Storks, Seagulls, Hawks. We managed to see all the birds plus more, but on this day the Crocodile failed to appear, which perhaps was a good thing, as towards the end... More
