About
Mont Orgueil Castle has cast its imposing shadow over the beautiful fishing port of Gorey for more than 800 years. One of the finest examples of a medieval fortress in existence, Mont Orgueil has witnessed many of the key events that have shaped Jersey’s history. Take in breathtaking views of the French coast as you delve into the network of staircases, towers and secret rooms to discover hidden treasures. We have a series of safety measures in place to help you enjoy your visit safely during the Covid-19 pandemic. These include a one-way system, local track-and-trace register and restricted group areas.

Castle visit with membership
Apr. 2021 • Couples
A beautiful sunny Saturday just called for a visit to the place.
On the reception, was talking to a gentleman who volunteers here. He offered us a guided tour. Just can't stress enough how amazing this experience has been! Beautifully explained the history (not only of the castle but also of the island) the restoration works.
A must visit. And we took up annual membership; amazing value for unlimited visits to all the heritage sites on the island.

Stunning historical castle
Apr. 2021
I hadn't been inside the case for many years and had forgotten how wonderful it is, full of history between England, France and Jersey and with stunning views over the bay and onto France. Otherwise known as Gorey Castle, there is so much to see and learn about how the castle was built, how the French tried to invade and were repelled on many occasions, stories about the Governor of Jersey Sir Walter Raleigh, how Charles II was welcomed by the people of Jersey plus much much more. You can even dress up in medieval clothing for the duration of your visit (COVID rules apply). In the summer there will be more things to do, such as watching falconry and there is a children's play area.

Well worth the visit
Mar. 2021 • Couples
This is a great place to visit. You can wander wherever (though there is a trail to follow) and there are many things to see both ancients and modern exhibits. The views are of course fabulous but it is the long history of the place that strikes you - Walter Raleigh was supposed to knock it down in the 16C and use the stone elsewhere - glad he decided against it!

Mont Orgueil Castle a must see
Oct. 2020
The castle is really worth visiting and is located in a very pretty setting, namely Gorey itself. There is a lot to see and do take the time to go right to the top of the castle for amazing views of Gorey and the coastline. There is also an option to dress up in medieval costumes but following Covid restrictions, items must be returned to the ticket office. It was a fun option, as one of our party decided to dress up as a knight and continued the whole visit in costume.

I hope that your Knight returned to normal once they'd left the castle....! Thank you so much for your wonderful review.

Most helpful people ever!

It’s not easy getting a 10 week old and his pram to the top of a medieval castle, complete with spiral staircases - but Gary made it happen!

Gorey is a pretty harbour town, but the best views are undoubtedly from the ramparts of Mont Orgeuil. You can see France on a clear day too. There are fun activities for kids older than ours (playground, dressing up as knights and princesses) and even teens/young adults (the wound man & wheel of urines spring to mind).

Rags is the cattle cat, and on this quiet day she accompanied us throughout our visit. Nick and Gary could not have been more accommodating and we were so thrilled to have made the decision to take on the steps!

A fantastic castle!
Oct. 2020
Mont Orguil is an absolutely fantastic castle to visit, and for me is right up there with some of the major castles in England. The castle is really well preserved and is genuinely huge, making for some excellent exploration. Even in the age of Covid there is very little that is off limits, and the one way route helps you to see pretty much everything. The castle forms a major part of the story of Jersey and really nicely segues into the narrative of the newer Elizabeth Castle which is a separate attraction in St Helier. We bought heritage passes which I highly recommend if you're planning on vistiting a few of the Jersey Heritage sights as you get 4 for the price of 3, and you can return over and over again. I also recommend downloading the free audio tour which you can download from their website which is worth following for extra info. The Covid precautions were good and made us feel safe. An absolute must see during your visit!

You'll certainly get your exercise here!
Oct. 2020
The day we went to Gorey and up to the Castle was a very windy one, which made some of the exposed places really blustery! They have the one way system pretty well laid out, but there were too many dead end rooms which weren't clearly marked as such.
However, all the other elements of a museum/fort experience were there, with very clear descriptions of what things were, and how they had been altered over the years. There is a great deal of climbing and descending on stone steps, circular staircases, etc.
Definitely worth a visit.

Great experience

A great experience bringing together the different ears of history in an easy way. A lot of steps so pram or people with mobility issues may struggle. Amazing sea views from the top.

A stunning Castle
Sep. 2020
This castle is somwhere that I've wanted to visit ever since I watched the Time Team programme from there on Channel 4 about ten years ago.
And I am so glad that I did. It was a vital part of Jersey's defence for several hundred years, and you can see why they built a fortress in that particular spot. France is only 14 miles away on the horizon.
If you time it right, you can join a free guided tour of the castle which is absolutely fascinating, I would not have missed it!
You get a good view of Gorey harbour from the top of the castle too. If you are ever in Jersey, and like you history, then Mt Orgueil Castle is a must!
