- Christina C5 contributionsEnjoyable even in December.Well maintained site. Thanks Parks Canada. We spent two hours exploring and the displays were not open! The washrooms were, yea. Entertained by a river otter. Best of all we were the only people there. Also sunny but windy day. Great views towards Washington State.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten December 18, 2023

Fort began in the 1850s and was updated/upgraded until about the 1950s when its defence capacity was no longer relevant See the operations rooms, gun turrets, search light emplacements. Close by is the Fisgard lighthouse (still operating) one of the first on the west coast of Canada. Both venues earily walkable and makes for a very pleasat afternoon .Allow 2 hours. This is a Parks Canada site so you can be sure it is well done.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten March 6, 2024

Got to see an actual red sea otter on the beach scratching it's back like a dog. That was really neat. Hanging out on a beautiful almost twenty degree day, learning a bit of history and the views, it's pretty tough not to enjoy this place! Some great history, lots of goose poop though!Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten March 20, 2024

If you’ve seen the City and all it offers take time out for a day for a treat.
Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse are waiting for you.
From the Main Gate to Officers Quarters
WWII Gun emplacements and all the history that comes with it. You really will feel as though the Sgt Major is nearby.
Then the stunning lighthouse. There’s breakfast waiting for you and work on the light too. Take the family for a real adventure. It appeals to all ages and the views, well, you’ll just have to “Sea” for yourselves.

We hadn’t heard of this fort until it showed up in the list of things to do in Victoria. Spent a few hours there wandering the fort. It was reasonably priced, the weather was perfect and we learned so much about our country’s preparation for war and readiness. Would recommend. There is a lot of walking if that matters to you.

Get ready for some walking! Fort Rodd Hill is similar to other Forts of the era maintained by the government across Canada and in particular reminds me of York Redoubt National Historic Site in Nova Scotia.
The area has walking trails with exceptional views of the ocean. Be sure to walk down to Charlotte's Landing, a log strewn beach located below the Belmont Battery.
The historical items present including guns emplacements from over many years and lights used during WW2 are engaging. Speaking of engaging, while we were present, there was a wedding and while the main part of the Fort was closed for about an hour, it was fun to be a peripheral part of the event.
Fisgard Lighthouse is really a separate attraction but included in your admission. A bracing hike from the Fort to the Lighthouse but worth doing. Nice exhibits inside the Lighthouse and awesome views of the area from the top.
Not far from Hatley Castle so makes a good double header!

We visited in the‘winter’ season, but it didn’t diminish our experience one bit. We took the time to read all the posted signs, so we had a lot of information about all the areas of the Fort and Lighthouse. We were able to wander around with very few other visitors, which gave the Fort a very serene feel, while still being compelling. The lighthouse was also very nice, standing guard at the harbours entrance. I originally didn’t think it would very a very interesting visit, but Fort Rodd and Fisgard Lighthouse proved me wrong. Two thumbs up.

Fort Rodd Hill Park and the lighthouse were great to visit and explore. The site was well maintained and had lots of signage explaining what went on from the mid 1860’s to the mid 1950’s. It did not see any military action from what we could see but did play a roll to protect the colony then the province.
The lighthouse was also interesting and it was not an easy life for the earlier keepers!
There is a small entrance fee and well worth it.

Unfortunately we visited on a weekday during the winter and there wasn't much going on. However, we had a great time exploring the grounds and looking into the few buildings that were open. This area is a combination of an old fort that was built in the 1890's and a light house. The fort has has modified over the years up till world war II. Some of the old guns are still in place. The light house is separate and is beautifully set along the rocky coastline. It appears that during the warmer months they hold demonstrations and some of the areas are a bit more interactive staffed with interpreters. Next time we're in Victoria this will be at the top of our must-do list.

I see the hours on the website are 10-5pm this coming September. Are the hours for the parking lot and grounds the same as the lighthouse/buildings? (other than the parking lot closing 30 minutes after the site)
Written August 30, 2017
Yes, the parking is the same area, whether you are visiting the lighthouse or the buildings.
Well worth the visit! And it is free this year, because of the Canada 150.
