James Dunsmuir's retirement estate, beautiful historic castle with 26 acre gardens. The Japanese garden was designed by the same designer who did the Japanese Garden in Butchart garden. It is a beautiful estate. About 9 miles from Victoria

This Castle is beautiful and the grounds are amazing. We enjoyed our tour, only wished we were able to see more once we go inside the castle. We were only allowed to see the first floor. The gardens surrounding the castle are breathtaking. I highly recommend visiting Hatley Castle.

Love wandering the gardens. Japanese garden offered beautiful vistas at the pond. Late Spring meant Rhodos and Camellias provided most of the colour but it was a peaceful lovely walk throughout the special garden areas. Have been in the summer when the rose garden is spectacular.

This is now part of a college, and it's a huge estate to maintain. The building from the outside is stunning, and it is great fun to imagine over the years how many famous people have visited and/or been there to film movies. However, now that the building is part of the college, it is used as college facilities. There... More

We just quickly stopped by. The price for a tour was fairly spendy, so we just walked around the outside. It looked cool, and probably would have been much more enjoyable if we had done the tour. That being said, we spent 10-15 minutes walking around the castle and then went on our merry way. It was worth the stop,... More

Royal Roads / Hatley Park is one of the nicest Canadian properties I've been to. You can imagine the life of the family that lived there in the early 1900s, especially after visiting the museum. You can also imagine the life of the cadets that were there for half a century. The WWII era navy buildings are a sight to... More

January may not be the best time of year to visit this place, but we were very glad that we took the time. We did not get into the building except for the small museum and gift shop. Had a very enjoyable time exploring the grounds and gardens. Wonderful old trees are shown off to their best when not cloaked... More

This is a nice local castle which is part of Royal Roads University now. Good grounds with great sea views.

There are two attractions here: the gardens and the "castle." As others have noted, the castle can be close for a variety of reasons (weddings, classes, etc.), so if that is the reason for your visit, you should call first. Our interest was to see the gardens, and they are always open. Obviously, what will be in bloom will depend... More

We stopped on our way from Victoria to Sooke. I wouldn't make the drive just for this attraction but was a pleasant stop on he route. We just missed the guided tour of the grounds and didn't want to wait around for he next one (every couple hours) so we did the self guided walk of the gardens. They are... More
