This is a nice walk. A bit difficult to find the starting point, when you are on your own. Crowded, even in August after the holiday season. Some parts are quite steep, some parts are quite small. Has nice views and small tunnels for which...More

Such lush vegetation clinging to the walls of the mountains! An exciting walk along some very narrow paths along the levadas. Some great tunnels that a flashlight is needed for (mind your head- mine took a beating despite the flashlight!) Despite some cloud cover, I...More

Very easy walk. Bring good shoes. And water. And a TORCH. You need to walk thru tunnels, with no lights, about 50meters. And there is a chance of slipping. Only toilet facilities is at the start of the walk. There is a small car park,...More

Worth getting there early before it gets too busy. There is a slight climb at the end to get to the waterfall. Stunning. Worth going onto the Caldeira Inferno but be aware this has one hard climb in the middle and one of our group...More

Really easy signposted route but was quite muddy underfoot. The low score is due to the constant cloud covering hence no view really and there was no cafe in sight. There were plenty of walkers along the 18km round trip we did and not 1...More

This is a main attraction for any hiker going to Madeira. It would be a 5-star place for me but there are many parts where trees have fallen over and made the path dangerous or impassable. There are huge crowds in both directions and people...More

Day tour started at Pico da Pedras due to work at Quiemadas - this adds about another 4.5km to the 13km route. Bad winter and storms have left large parts waterlogged and slippery underfoot - need to take things slowly around stairs on the only...More

We had a great walk to the inferno and back... grabbing a few Geocache on the way. All bar one part of the trip was pretty level altitude...as you get closer to Inferno there is a set of steps which will take the wind out...More

At the time of our visit late April 2018 the usual road up to Queimadas was closed and a diversion was in place as the car park is being re-developed. We had to park in a lay by further down the road which added about...More

Just take a taxi to the start of the walk (and ask the driver to come and fetch you 5 hours later). Take a picnic. There is no way you can get lost on the path. You can organise it by yourselves. We didn't meet or get in... More

Bus runs to Santana and then you would need taxi as you wouldn't want to waste time walking on the road when the levada is long in itself. You would also need taxi back to Santana and bus. A hired car is best option.
